Bidder Eligibility: This Limited Term Employee (LTE) position is a temporary position for one year term, which may be renewed at Sandia's discretion up to a maximum of seven years. What Your Job Will Be Like: We are seeking a dedicated and hardworking Mechanical Technologist (Early/Mid-Career) with mechanical training, machining experience, and equipment maintenance experience in the Concentrating Solar Technologies Department. The technologist will work as part of a team to assist our R&D staff with the improvement and modernization of the test capabilities at the National Solar Thermal Test Facility (NSTTF) and assist the execution of R&D to advance concentrating solar thermal renewable energy. The work performed will support many different projects and testing campaigns by providing fixturing designed by engineers, troubleshooting of mechanical equipment (linear actuators, hydraulic pumps, motors), and providing maintenance on existing capabilities (heliostats, systems in the solar tower). This work requires a strong commitment to safety and following ES&H requirements and guidelines. Due to the nature of the work, the selected applicant must be able to work onsite. On any given day, you may be called on to: + Plan, produce, and assemble mechanical parts for test fixtures + Work outdoors, at heights on assembly and troubleshooting systems, including high temperature and high pressure systems + Operate, troubleshoot, and maintain mechanical and electromechanical equipment + Assist in calibration of site capabilities, including the heliostat field, the solar tower and the solar furnace + Help mechanical engineers design, develop, test, and manufacture particle transport and other devices and fixtures + Assist other technologists in maintenance of capabilities, fabrication, installation and testing of materials, components and fixtures Qualifications We Require: + High school diploma plus at least 3 years of relevant experience with design, installation, testing, repair, and maintenance of mechanical equipment and systems + Experience with the control and operation of mechanical or electromechanical equipment + Experience using blueprints and drawings to plan and execute work + Experience with thermal systems, pressurized systems and electrical components + Ability to obtain a DOE L-level security clearance Qualifications We Desire: + Experience troubleshooting, investigating alternative solutions, and recommending solutions on problems affecting systems and equipment, including hydraulics, motors, actuated equipment + Experience preparing layouts and drawings of the assembly process and parts to be made using three-dimensional design software + Ability to create a safe work environment by properly maintaining equipment + Ability to evaluate specifications in design drawings + Ability to work independently and as well as part of a team + Knowledge of Sandia National Laboratories’ policies, practices, and procedures About Our Team: Sandia National Laboratories is a world leader in the development of renewable energy systems. Our Concentrated Solar Technologies Department located in Albuquerque, New Mexico, develops Concentrating Solar Power (CSP) systems in partnership with DOE, industry partners, and the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) to facilitate the successful development and market deployment of utility scale solar electricity, sustainable solar fuels, and industrially relevant solar thermal chemistry.
