What Your Job Will Be Like: We are seeking a Mechanical Design Engineer who will utilize state of the art facilities to solve challenges impacting our national security. This position will offer you substantial opportunity for training, technical mentorship, and work across multiple nuclear deterrence programs. As part of the surety mechanisms group, you’ll help craft unique solutions for the design and development of mechanism components that play a critical role in assuring the safety and security of our nation’s nuclear deterrent in a wide range of scenarios. In this role, you’ll collaborate with engineering and research teams across the broader Nuclear Security Enterprise to design, produce, and assess these mechanically intricate components in assemblies consisting of over 100 custom-designed and built piece parts. On any given day, you may be called upon to: + Utilize your expertise in mechanical engineering and leadership skills to field high-integrity products, meeting both technical and programmatic requirements + Utilize advanced engineering tools to solve complex engineering challenges + Serve as a subject matter expert on artificial intelligence and machine learning concepts and set the strategy for the group + Provide time-critical assistance on challenging technical product issues + Lead collaboration with S&T colleagues + Employ analytical thinking to lead resolution of ambiguous problems with a multi-disciplinary team + Develop innovative design concepts meeting Mark Quality hardware through requirements negotiation, trade studies, and virtual prototyping while engaging with relevant stakeholders + Advance component designs to a qualification-ready state through detailed definition development, modeling/analysis, and iterative design-build-test cycles + Mature designs to a production-ready state through specification development and collaboration with the production agency + Lead investigations and resolution of anomalies through analysis and testing + Use sound project management skills to provide structure to the teams activity level work so the team can prioritize and execute properly + Identify project risk so that appropriate handling and mitigation strategies can be developed, communicated, and executed + Present your work to peers, customers, and management in formal and informal settings Due to the nature of the work, the selected applicant must be able to work onsite and some travel is required. Qualifications We Require: + Master’s or PhD in mechanical engineering or a related discipline plus 4 years of relevant experience; or Bachelor’s in a mechanical engineering or related STEM discipline plus 8 years of relevant experience + Active DoE Q security clearance Qualifications We Desire: + Experience in the design, development, and production of ND mechanism components + Experience working with high-level customers, external vendors and the KCNSC production agency + Experience leading a multi-disciplinary team + Basic proficiency with computer aided design/drafting + Awareness of Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning tools + Proficiency with Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing and tolerance analysis + Familiarity with materials characterization techniques + Excellent communication skills including the ability to prepare clearly-written reports and deliver well-articulated briefings + Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively with diverse teams and across differing communication styles + Genuine technical curiosity, and an interest and aptitude for learning + Strong commitment to quality, safety, collaboration, and teamwork About Our Team: We are a mechanical engineering group responsible for the full life cycle of mechanism components for Nuclear Deterrence (ND) applications. Mechanisms for which we have design responsibility include unique signal strong links, environmental sensing devices, and weapon release detection switches. We have a diverse team with wide ranges of skills and experience, and we value critical thinking skills and good mechanical insight.
