NNSA Requirements for MedPEDs:
If you have a Medical Portable Electronic Device (MedPED), such as a pacemaker, defibrillator, drug-releasing pump, hearing aids, or diagnostic equipment and other equipment for measuring, monitoring, and recording body functions such as heartbeat and brain waves, if employed by Sandia National Laboratories you may be required to comply with NNSA security requirements for MedPEDs.
If you have a MedPED and you are selected for an on-site interview at Sandia National Laboratories, there may be additional steps necessary to ensure compliance with NNSA security requirements prior to the interview date.
What Your Job Will Be Like:
The Secure Embedded Systems Department, 5327, focuses on the research and development of flight electronics and algorithms for cutting-edge capabilities critical to Nuclear Deterrence (ND), Department of Defense (DoD) and other US Government (USG) systems. Our activities span lower TRL research in high performance electronic subsystem hostile environment reliability to fielding pathfinder systems for major ND and other DoD and USG programs. The team has extensive experience in embedded flight electronics, inertial navigation system (INS) design and analysis, and all the advanced capabilities required to underpin effective deliveries including extensive electronic circuit/digital design talent and firmware/software expertise.
The department is responsible for ongoing efforts to bring hostile environment survivability to emerging ND and DoD systems. The manager is expected to ensure that technical capabilities are maintained and advanced over time to ensure the department staff are consistently able to provide leading edge solutions to our nation’s national security problems. Line management responsibilities currently include approximately 14 staff and 4 students. Responsibilities also include crafting the department vision, hiring staff, staff development, general MOW oversight, training, performance assessment, work assignments, salary, and recognition/disciplinary actions. In addition, the manger is expected to work in a collaborative manner with all department and group managers across Center 5300. Staff recruitment and retention will also be a key component of success by helping drive innovation and differentiation in the solutions provided by this department.
Qualifications We Require:
+ Advanced degree (MS or PhD) in electrical, computer engineering or STEM disciplines plus 5 years of experience; or equivalent (BS plus 8 years of experience).
+ Experience working in a high rigor product development environment, primarily on-site.
+ Demonstrated leadership skills including an ability to lead innovative and multidisciplinary technical teams with the flexibility required to respond to evolving sponsor requirements.
+ Demonstrated ability to achieve milestones for complex technical projects including meeting performance, cost, and schedule requirements.
+ Demonstrated organizational, interpersonal, team building, communication, and presentation skills.
+ Ability to travel with moderate frequency (~monthly).
+ Ability to motivate and mentor staff and resolve conflicts.
+ Active US DOE Q security clearance required.
+ Ability to obtain and maintain additional security clearance/higher accesses such as an SCI clearance, which may require a polygraph test.
Qualifications We Desire:
Ideally, we would like to see your background include a few of the following:
+ Advanced degree (MS or PhD) in electrical, computer engineering or relevant discipline plus 8 years of experience.
+ Education or experience in embedded hardware and software/firmware design targeted to components like FGPAs, SoCs (Field Programmable Gate Arrays, System on a Chip).
+ A minimum of two years of demonstrated leadership experience.
+ Avionics hardware or software experience (e.g. real time operating systems, VPX based digital architectures…).
+ Any prior experience with digital assurance techniques (formal methods, verification and validation, memory safe programming languages like Rust, supply chain assurance…).
+ Any prior experience in hardening electronics/firmware/software against hostile environments like radiation, high power microwave, cyber…
+ Experience in radiation testing / radiation hardened electronics design and/or testing experience.
+ Experience managing projects with budgets in excess of $5M / year.
+ Familiarity with the ND requirements, qualification, and testing process.
+ Familiarity with conventional and/or nuclear subsystem electrical design / system engineering.
+ Experience with writing proposals for new technical work and interacting with customers.
+ Current SCI clearance.

Security Clearance:
Sandia is required by DOE to conduct a pre-employment drug test and background review that includes checks of personal references, credit, law enforcement records, and employment/education verifications.
