CSIRO Early Research Career (CERC) Postdoctoral Fellowships provide opportunities to scientists and engineers who have completed their doctorate and have less than three years of relevant postdoctoral work experience. These fellowships aim to develop the next generation of future leaders of the innovation system.

The Language and Social Computing (LaSC) team is seeking a CERC Fellow who will contribute to developing state-of-the-art AI technology based on the latest of Natural Language Processing (NLP) techniques.  The team’s research is currently focused on mining scientific and technical literature to help with government and industry document-related workflows. The CERC Fellow will work on projects which will have an impact through real-world applications (such as contributing to efforts that help our threatened species) as well as through publications.

Your duties will include:

 

  • Research and develop natural language processing (NLP) and machine learning (ML) approaches in the areas of information extraction and/or text-to-text generation.
  • Research and develop NLP-related technologies, with application to scientific literature and technical documents.
  • Conduct ML/NLP experiments, prepare data set and scientific publications.
  • Collaborate with the LaSC team in researching, developing and deploying novel NLP and ML solutions for industry and government.
  • Work on client-facing projects, performing applied research on NLP and ML.

Salary: AU$92k - AU$101k plus up to 15.4% superannuation

To be considered you will need:

 

  • A doctorate (or will shortly satisfy the requirements of a PhD) in a relevant discipline area, such as Computational Linguistics, Natural Language Processing, Machine Learning, Information Retrieval, or a related field.  Please note: To be eligible for this role you must have no more than 3 years (or full-time equivalent) of postdoctoral research experience.
  • Demonstrated experience of machine learning techniques and neural network methods for natural language processing.
  • Demonstrated experience in using machine learning libraries with textual data.
  • An excellent understanding of natural language processing and computational linguistics problems and solid programming skills with knowledge of Python and Java.
  • High level written and oral communication skills with the demonstrated success of working within a research team including representing the team effectively internally and externally and presenting research outcomes at national and international conferences.
