Job Description

Position Highlights:

The Patient Support Specialist processes applications for financial assistance through the departmental Patient Support Fund to assist eligible patients with expenses related to receiving care at the Cancer Center. This position generates referrals to community resources to assist patients in lieu of using Moffitt funds, and acts as a liaison for and has oversight of the various philanthropic funds used by the Patient Support Fund.

 

The Patient Support Specialist serves as an organizational expert for patients and families, as well as faculty and staff, for the policies related to and completion of commercial disability and FMLA claims. This position ensures only eligible patients receive assistance, and facilitates patients being able to keep employment or income while receiving treatment; which then allows them to maintain insurance coverage during that time.

 

The Ideal Candidate

The ideal candidate will have the following qualifications:

·Bachelor's Degree

·Minimum of two (2) years' experience working in a hospital or physician practice setting with a social/behavioral, business or insurance related focus.

 

Responsibilities:

·Processes patient applications for financial assistance from the Patient Support Fund for expenses related to receiving care using established departmental financial policies and makes determination about the level of assistance patients may be eligible for.

·Manages billing reconciliation for expenses paid to Moffitt vendors from departmental funds such as cab vouchers, home healthcare, home infusion and durable medical equipment expenses.

·Obtains and reviews for acceptability the documentation that supports the financial decisions made in the Patient Support fund application process.

·Works closely with Cancer Center staff concerning financial eligibility and status of applications, and helps to problem-solve the needs of patients by providing internal and external resource information.

·Maintains current database of community resources and makes referrals to resources when appropriate.

·Acts as a liaison with insurance companies, government agencies, employers, Moffitt physicians, clinical staff, patients and families to resolve issues related to complex claims issues and denials.

·Other duties as assigned.

Credentials and Qualifications:

·Bachelor's Degree

·Minimum 2 years of experience working in a hospital or physician practice setting with a social/behavioral, business or insurance related focus

·Knowledge of medical terminology
