Job Description

The Nuclear Science and Engineering Division (NSE) is seeking a highly motivated Nuclear Engineer to join the Research and Test Reactors (RTR) Department (www.anl.gov/nse/research-and-test-reactors) to support reactor core design and safety analysis. The RTR Department conducts work related to the conversion of existing research reactors to the use of new low-enriched uranium (LEU) fuels and proliferation resistance optimization during the design and deployment of new research reactors.

The individual will perform computational structural analysis, including stress, heat transfer, and coupled thermo-mechanical analyses, using finite element method (FEM) software. Also, the individual will be expected to contribute to the analysis of nuclear fuel systems and other nuclear reactor components using computational fluid dynamics (CFD). The individual will validate and calibrate models using experimental or alternative simulation results, support verification and validation of structural analysis and CFD software codes in accordance with technical program requirements, document and prepare reports on activities, and participate in technical presentations to the technical community.

Position Requirements

  • Knowledge of nuclear engineering principles, theories, and practices for the design and analysis of reactor systems.

  • Knowledge of structural analysis relevant to nuclear reactors, components, or other energy systems.

  • Skill in using one or more finite element analysis software (e.g., COMSOL, ABAQUS, STAR-CCM+).

  • Skill in developing, designing, and evaluating innovative approaches and solutions to quantitative problems is necessary.

  • Knowledge of CFD or fluid-structure interaction would be an asset.

  • Knowledge of computer programming for scientific and engineering applications, preferably using Fortran, would be an asset.

  • Knowledge of computational techniques, numerical methods, and data analysis.

  • Skill in the application of programming languages (e.g. Python, MATLAB, C/C++) for scripting and data analysis.

  • Background knowledge of modeling engineering systems.

  • Basic understanding and/or familiarity with software verification and validation approaches.

  • Demonstrated interpersonal, oral and written communication.

  • Ability to model Argonne’s Core Values: Impact, Safety, Respect, Integrity, and Teamwork.

Since structural analysis is an essential topic within many engineering fields, the specific field of engineering studied by the successful candidate might include nuclear, mechanical, civil, aerospace engineering, or a related field. The selected candidate will be placed at the appropriate level (RD2 or RD3) depending upon the depth and breadth of relevant knowledge, skills, and experience brought to the position. The requirements for the desired levels are as follows:

  • RD2 Level: Bachelor’s and 5+ years; Master’s and 3+ years; Doctorate and 0+ years, or equivalent.

  • RD3 Level: Bachelor’s and 8+ years; Master’s and 5+ years; Doctorate and 4+ years, or equivalent
