What Your Job Will Be Like: Our team is seeking a dedicated Postdoctoral Appointee to pursue high impact science in the field of polymer and materials science who is interested in performing fundamental research and development in polymer science with a range of applications including additive manufacturing. You will join a team of dedicated researchers and will be encouraged to lead at least multiple experimental programs. Your research will include the study of the fundamental chemistry and physics of polymer materials to engineer materials with advanced chemical, mechanical, optical, and electrical properties. We use modern approaches in polymer chemistry and materials science, such as metathesis polymerization and hydrosilylation, to develop materials with optimal production and performance characteristics. We rely on a broad range of characterization techniques including UV-Vis and FTIR spectroscopy, rheology, differential scanning calorimetry, dynamic mechanical analysis, and nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy. You will be encouraged to contribute and execute innovative research ideas, present your research at various internal and external forums, and publish your research in peer-reviewed journals. You will also be provided the opportunity, if desired, to seek funding for additional research topics with the guidance and support of your staff mentor. This postdoctoral position is an excellent opportunity for anyone seeking to transition from their PhD research in chemistry, polymer science, or materials science to a fast-paced research and development environment in a National Lab setting that provides ample opportunity for collaborative, innovative research. Qualifications We Require: + Possess, or are pursuing, a PhD in Polymer Science, Materials Science, Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a closely related field (PhD must be conferred within 5 years prior to employment) + A proven record of innovation as highlighted by peer-reviewed publications and presentations at national or international conferences. + Ability to acquire and retain a DOE Q-level security clearance Qualifications We Desire: + Strong work ethic and motivation to lead multiple research programs + Broad experience in polymer and materials synthesis and characterization, including techniques in chromatography, spectroscopy, microscopy, rheology, and thermomechanical testing + Experience/interest in additive manufacturing + Desire to mentor undergraduate or graduate students About Our Team: The Advanced Materials Laboratory Department conducts research and development in a wide range of novel materials synthesis strategies and unique processing techniques to advance scientific understanding and provide practical solutions to the needs of a wide variety of Sandia customers and external entities. Specifically, activities in our research groups include; synthesizing new precursor chemistries and surface functional groups, understanding different routes to nano-scale particles and thin films, understanding the rheology of metal-particle inks and ceramic slurries, investigating new catalyst materials and conducting mechanistic studies of catalysis, and investigating the self-assembly of nanoparticles in 2- and 3-dimensions. Processing research and development includes providing a Direct Ink Write capability that can deliver metal nanoparticle inks to topographically challenging substrates, electrospinning of fibers of vastly different compositions, and combining different materials and processing strategies to realize solar energy conversion, CO2 sequestration as well as other Sandia missions. Our customers include all of Sandia's mission areas and numerous external collaborators. Our laboratory facilities are located at the Advanced Materials Laboratory, a leased facility on the campus of the University of New Mexico. This geographical advantage allows us to work closely with students and faculty at local community colleges and UNM, as well as universities throughout the United States. Our team is committed to nurturing environment compatible with a broad group of people and perspectives in accordance with the changing makeup of the workforce.
