Position Summary

Performs donor phlebotomy and donor apheresis, OR therapeutic apheresis. Assists in training new employees. Participates in quality assurance activities to continually ensure safety of the blood supply and provide the highest quality of service/care. Demonstrates a caring and professional manner at all times.

Essential Functions:

  • Performs donor phlebotomy, donor and therapeutic apheresis according to Donor Apheresis Center standard operating procedures.
  • Participates in standard operating procedure validation and recommends changes prior to implementation.
  • Maintains knowledge of rationale and techniques relating to blood collection and apheresis.
  • Assists in training new employees and retraining current employees, serves as a resource person for the Apheresis Nurse I and LVNs
  • Participates in the design of Donor Center trials and maintains records. Gathers statistical data, assists in writing summary reports.
  • Participates in quality assurance activities to continually ensure safety of the blood supply and provide high quality service to internal and external customers.
  • Enhances professional growth and development through participation in educational programs, reviewing current literature, attending inservice meetings, and workshops.
  • Reviews all patient/donor information and product data. Identifies abnormal values and initiates follow up.
  • Assesses donor/patient condition during apheresis procedures and whole blood donation; recognizes and treats reactions according to standard operating procedures.
  • Promotes team work among staff and effectively communicates department issues to the supervisors.
  • Performs preventative maintenance and quality control on facility equipment as assigned; reports outliers to supervisors.
  • Maintains complete and accurate records of Donor Center procedures and activities including, but not limited to donor/patient records, equipment maintenance and quality control, error/incident/quality monitoring reports, and customer complaints.
  • Prioritizes workflow, readily adapts to changes in assignment, and completes work in a timely manner.
  • Reviews pertinent departmental standard operating procedures annually and as needed.
  • Maintains current nursing licensure, CPR and annual safety certification.
  • Performs tests requesting for donor/patient and product testing using Sunquest Laboratory Information Systems.
  • Participates in off-site blood drives as assigned.
  • Follows established City of Hope and department policies, procedures, objectives, performance improvement, attendance, safety, environmental, and infection control guidelines, including adherence to the workplace Code of Conduct and Compliance Plan. Practices a high level of integrity and honesty in maintaining confidentiality.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned or requested.

Basic education, experience and skills required for consideration:

  • Three years experience in blood donor collections and/or apheresis procedures. Experience in training or as a preceptor preferred.
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing

Required Certification/Licensure:

  • Current California RN License
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) CPR Card through American Heart Association

Preferred education experience and skills:

  • Apheresis experience

Pay Rate: $55.74 - $80.82 / hour

The estimated pay scale represents the typical [salary/hourly] range City of Hope reasonably expects to pay for this position, with offers determined based on several factors which may include, but not be limited to, the candidate’s experience, expertise, skills, education, job scope, training, internal equity, geography/market, etc. This pay scale is subject to change from time to time.
