Job Description
In this position, you will characterize and analyze the behavior of nuclear fuels and structural materials used in current- and next-generation nuclear energy systems and research reactors. You will develop correlations to describe the characteristics of materials, and computer models to describe their behavior in typical reactor environments. You will participate in planning, developing, and implementing research projects. You will perform experiments at Argonne’s Intermediate Voltage Electron Microscope (IVEM) facility, the Argonne Tandem Linear Accelerator System (ATLAS), or the Advanced Photon Source (APS). You will also perform post-irradiation examinations using FIB, SEM, and TEM. Furthermore, you will compare and validate model-predictions of nuclear material performance characteristics with experimental results and/or benchmark models. You will evaluate and document the results of analytical activities for presentation to the broader technical community. You will analyze and interpret in-reactor post-irradiation examination data in support of DOE programs. You will support the preparation of proposals to obtain internal/external funding to support new projects.
Position Requirements
Extensive experience in using the following characterization techniques and analyzing the associated experimental results from those techniques is required: TEM, FIB/SEM, and one or more X-ray analysis techniques such as diffraction, scattering, tomography, fluorescence, etc.
Knowledge of fundamental materials science principles, theories, characterization techniques, and practices for the design, analysis, and testing of candidate nuclear fuel and cladding materials is essential.
Skill in the conception, design, evaluation, and execution of innovative approaches to quantitative materials science problems is necessary.
Skills in the use of computers and in the analysis of computational results,

This level of knowledge is typically achieved through a formal education in nuclear engineering, materials science, physics, or associated field at the Ph.D. degree level & 1-2 years of professional experience.
