Job Description

Summary

The Department of Medicine, Section of Gastroenterology and Hepatology, is seeking  a Medical Assistant with clinical knowledge providing the ability to support the clinical operation within the department in a clinical and telephone triaging capacity. The ideal  candidate will support our exciting new Live Answer Medical Team and serve as a float in the section as needed.  This position is an outpatient position located at the McNair Campus in the Texas Medical Center.

Job Duties

  • Performs medical phone triaging for patients calling for medical guidance from their healthcare team. 
  • Documents medical information to be communicated to the patient. 
  • Performs routine patient care responsibilities such as taking vital signs, collecting specimens, and safely performing laboratory Point of Care Testing.
  • Collects patient history, performs medication reconciliation and enters medical information into the EMR system (EPIC). 
  • Notes the primary complaint/reason for patient’s visit.  
  • Assists with procedures while working within the clinic, including but not limited to administering vaccines and/or medications under direction of a supervising provider. 
  • Schedules patient tests, procedures, and appointments.
  • Responds to routine patient phone calls and My Chart messages and route to either nurse or provider for assistance. 
  • Performs clerical/administrative responsibilities such as filing and/or scanning patient medical records, obtain lab/x-ray reports, hospital notes, and referral information.
  • Maintains clean and safe work environment; stocks supplies for various department needs. 

Minimum Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED and completion of an approved Medical Assistant Training program through an accredited institution.
  • Current certification as a Medical Assistant through an accredited professional organization (AAMA, AMT, ARMA, NCCT, NAHP, NHA, NAHP, AMCA, or NRMA). New employees who are not currently certified, must obtain certification within six months of employment.
