Summary


The Department of Family and Community Medicine is seeking a Physician's Assistant/NP to perform a variety of duties to provide quality patient care to the sick or injured or others requiring healthcare services. The scope of services includes comprehensive primary care for homeless men, women, and children. This position reports to the Healthcare for the Homeless - Houston (HHH) Medical Director.


Job Duties



  • Performs pertinent history and physical exams of patients

  • Administers treatment within a multidisciplinary setting serving the homeless population

  • Performs and evaluates diagnostic procedures and laboratory tests within the Physician's Assistant's scope of practice

  • Follows established protocols to manage specific patient problems/illnesses/care in collaboration with supervising physician

  • Provides constructive input on improving the delivery of services to medical director and clinic manager

  • Maintains medical record using an electronic medical record, writes accurate notes and orders which are co-signed by supervising physician when appropriate

  • Is sensitive in working with the homeless/medically underserved population

  • Is self-directed with good organizational skills

  • Communicates and works well within a collaborative team environment

  • May supervise the work of a medical assistant, nursing students, medical students and family medicine residents where appropriate

  • Adheres to agency policies and procedures

  • Performs other tasks or special assignments as necessary to maintain proper operation and patient care



 



CLINICAL SETTING




  • The Physician's Assistant provides patient care to homeless men, women, and children in primary care clinics located in local homeless shelters, and provides medical outreach services to homeless individuals living on the streets, in encampments, and in shelters/missions. Daily work hours may vary with minimal evening or weekend hours (includes one four-hour session per month on Saturday morning). On-call schedules are shared among providers, with each clinician taking call 3 - 4 months of the year, with an average of 2 calls per month.


Minimum Qualifications



  • Completion of an accredited Physician's Assistant Program

  • Current, valid license to practice in the State of Texas as a Physician's Assistant

  • Two years clinical experience, preferably with a medically underserved population

  • Education Required: Master’s degree in in Nursing.

  • Experience Required: None required.

  • Certification/Licenses/Registration: Current license as a Registered Nurse (RN) by the State of Texas Board of Nursing. Current Texas Licensure as an Advanced Practice Nurse (APRN-NP), and specialty certification as required by department. Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification

  • Not normally required to exert physical effort.

  • Frequently handles/works with biohazards or risks for potential job-related injury, such as those found in an ordinary laboratory or clinic environment.
