The School of Civil Engineering and Environmental Science (CEES) in the Gallogly College of Engineering (GCoE) at the University of Oklahoma (OU) invites applications for a tenure track faculty position at the Assistant Professor level in Environmental Science, Environmental Engineering, or a related discipline with a focus on Engineering With Nature (EWN), Ecological Engineering or Natural Infrastructure. Preferred candidates will have expertise examining innovative Nature-Based Solutions (NBS) to address the complex interactions of societal needs and ecosystem functions, including provision of valuable ecosystem services, resilience to natural hazards exacerbated by climate change, and related environmental challenges. CEES has a long history of distinguished accomplishments in water-related research that cuts across many disciplines and is supported by a variety of funding sources at the local, state, and federal levels, with strong external partners across the region and nation, including the Native Nations of Oklahoma.
The successful candidate will have the opportunity to collaborate with researchers in OU's Center for Restoration of Ecosystems and Watersheds (CREW; crew.ou.edu), Water Technologies for Emerging Regions (WaTER) Center (WaTER.ou.edu), and Oklahoma Water Survey (OWS; ou.edu/okh2o) among others, and to join a group of interdisciplinary faculty working on an U.S. Army Corps of Engineers funded project entitled Exploring Engineering With Nature Opportunities and Applications in the Inland United States. CEES was awarded this new faculty line in Engineering With Nature (EWN) to complement existing faculty efforts and capabilities in this area. The successful candidate will join a large dynamic team and be provided ample opportunities for collaboration on subjects of mutual interest. EWN expertise, combined with existing research strengths, will provide the means to find holistic solutions to the grand societal challenge of sustainable, resilient water supplies and water management in an era of changing climate, land use, and demographics.
GCoE is targeting a 40% increase in faculty over the next five years to accommodate our strong growth in undergraduate programs (75% increase in enrollment over the last six years) and in support of our ambitious plan for strategic research growth (https://www.ou.edu/coe/about). This position is part of the first wave of hires to complement existing faculty and expand into new areas in order to meet the grand challenges of the future. CEES’s 26 faculty offer four undergraduate degrees: civil engineering, environmental engineering, architectural engineering, and environmental science with a combined enrollment of 425 B.S. students. In 2018, CEES launched two online M.S. programs – one in hydrology and water security and one in civil engineering; they are flourishing with an expected August 2022 combined enrollment of over 200 students. CEES prides itself on excellence in research and teaching and is noted for its collaborative and collegial culture that has made it one of the top research units in the college. CEES has an outstanding record of mentoring new faculty hires, with nine previous NSF CAREER recipients. Each new faculty member is paired with a faculty mentor to discuss topics such as teaching, grant writing, publishing, time management, networking, financial management, work/life balance, and navigating departmental culture. Applicants should have an earned Ph.D. in Environmental Science, Environmental Engineering, Water Resources Engineering, Civil Engineering, or a related field at the start of the appointment. The successful applicant is expected to assist the department in offering core and elective undergraduate courses, as well as graduate courses in their area of specialty, and will have the opportunity to teach in the burgeoning online program. The successful applicant is also expected to develop an active research program leading to national and international recognition. CEES will serve as the academic home for the successful candidate, but joint appointments with other academic units will be considered, depending on research interests and expertise.
