Job Description Summary:
The Division of Medical Informatics at the University of Kansas Medical Center (KUMC) is seeking an ambitious and highly motivated Postdoctoral Fellow to contribute to a rapidly growing research program focused on the application of Biomedical Informatics approaches to advance Sleep Medicine. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to address relevant questions about the role of sleep and sleep disorders management on improving health using innovative data science techniques. Areas of interest include characterization of obstructive sleep apnea heterogeneity using physiological data, understanding patterns of positive airway pressure therapy and their effect on adherence and outcomes (including cardiovascular diseases and COVID-19 related outcomes), and integration of non-conventional sources of sleep data (e.g., clinical notes, social media and wearables). You will have the opportunity to work in close collaboration with clinicians, scientists, and healthcare systems with access to deep clinical data warehouses (e.g. electronic health records, billing, claims, sleep source systems and over 50 million unstructured notes) and networking opportunities with large national and international consortia in sleep medicine and medical informatics.

Job Description

The successful candidate is expected to participate in collaborative projects and will receive mentorship to support a transition to independent research in the field. There will be outstanding networking opportunities as the candidate may be involved in research studies that are part of large national and international consortia in the field.

Required qualifications:
PhD in Biomedical Informatics, Data Science, Biostatistics, Bioengineering, Epidemiology, Public Health or related field
Fluency in one or more scientific programming environment: R, Python, Linux/UNIX, SQL
Experience with research and data analysis using Electronic Health Records and/or large publicly available datasets
A track record of completed projects in health outcomes research with peer-reviewed publications
Excellent written and oral communication skills
Ability to communicate effectively with diverse stakeholders including clinicians, IT staff, basic scientists, and translational researchers
Preferred qualifications:
Experience with sleep medicine research
Experience with health disparities research
Experience with design and interpretation of machine learning studies
Experience with data integration, harmonization and standard terminologies in medicine
Experience with reproducible research frameworks
Job duties outlined:
Navigate through access of large datasets (clinical data and publicly available)
Formulate hypotheses, perform data analysis and interpret results in the area of sleep medicine health outcomes research utilizing large datasets
Lead and write manuscripts describing research results
Present at seminars, conferences and other events
Design independent research questions and apply for internal and external funding
