SUMMARY: 

Since the founding of the Sanford Burnham Prebys Medical Discovery Institute, our Cancer Center scientists have led the way in tackling the most vexing medical challenges and discovering new treatments that improve patients’ lives. Continuing in this tradition of innovation, we are focused on developing therapies for unmet clinical needs, as well as for getting those therapies to patients as quickly as possible.  The Associate Director of our Cancer Center will partner closely with Ze’ev Ronai, the Cancer Center Director and renowned scientist who has dedicated his life to addressing cancer patients’ needs.  

The Associate Director will lead the administrative oversight of Cancer Center strategic planning, management, and evaluation. The successful candidate oversees and ensures appropriate administrative and financial management of the Cancer Center Support Grant (CCSG) and institutional research training grants, as well as various other Cancer Center initiatives.

The Cancer Center is one of seven official basic cancer centers designated by the National Cancer Institute (NCI)—the highest federal rating a cancer center can achieve.  The position formally represents the Cancer Center to the NCI.

 

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES:
 

  • Provides administrative leadership and subject matter expertise in Cancer Center strategic planning, management, and evaluation.

  • Leads and directs activities and team members to deliver on requirements and key deliverables of the CCSG and institutional training grants, which includes non-competing continuation and renewal submissions.

  • Directs, advises, and leads Cancer Center management on the budget and financial records for the CCSG and institutional research training grants; participates in, monitors, evaluates, and certifies financial analysis and forecasting.   

  • Provides financial oversight, analysis, and planning for the Shared Resources. 

  • Being a major part of CCSG funds, work with Cancer Center Associate Director of Shared Resources and the Cancer Center Director to manage financial operations and assist in planning / development of Shared Resources. 

  • Chairs the Administrative Team and liaises with key groups and boards in support of Cancer Center goals and initiatives.

  • Contributes and provides recommendations in support of Center’s program structure and membership.  Supports recruitment of faculty, planning of recruitment packages utilizing CCSG Developmental Funds, and coordinating with the Director and Institute staff.

  • Provides oversight and guidance related to event planning and management.

  • Oversight of Education and Training programs (in coordination with the Associate Director, Education and Training), Community Outreach, and DEI initiatives

REQUIREMENTS:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, or other related field. Advanced degree preferred.

  • A minimum of seven years of experience with research administration, including preparation of grant proposals, funding agency requirements and budgets.

  • Proficiency with financial and database systems, and thorough working knowledge of software packages.

  • Financial management skills, including multi-year planning, budgeting, forecasting, oversight and report/grant proposal preparation.

  • Familiarity with National Institute of Health (NIH) and other Federal agency policies and procedures.

  • Proof of covid-19 vaccination

  • Effective communication and strong interpersonal skills and ability to interact with varied groups.
