Research conducted within CSIRO Oceans & Atmosphere (O&A) provides for the large-scale multidisciplinary sciences that inform the use and conservation of Australia's marine environments. We develop tools for decision making in coastal-marine regions and provide scientific support to and industries, society, and authorities responsible for the sustainable management and use of Australian biodiversity and national and international fisheries.

CSIRO has a large and continuing dive program of approximately 1,000 dives per year which operates out of three locations (Hobart, Perth and Brisbane).
The role of Field/Lab Technician will fulfill the strong need for a versatile junior staff member with an integrated skill set to be a dive co-ordinator/coxswain and assist in a broad set of field and laboratory work.   To succeed in this role, you will be a qualified diver with the skills to support intensive field campaigns across multiple projects

 

Your duties will include:

  • Providing Diving, Dive Coordinator, coxswain duties and the skippering of small boats.
  • Participating in and providing assistance with logistics for field and dive trips and the preparation and maintenance of field equipment. 
  • Supervising dive safety and restricting or suspending any dive operations considered unsafe.
  • Conducting a broad range of administrative, research, laboratory and aquarium duties including data entry, recording of experimental results, collecting, and processing of field samples for carbon analysis.
  • Working collaboratively as part of a multi-disciplinary team, and business unit to carry out tasks in support of CSIRO scientific objectives.

 

Location: Hobart, TAS

Salary: AU$66,163 - AU$84,207 per annum (pro-rata for part-time) plus, up to 15.4% superannuation

To be considered you will need:

  • A Bachelor’s degree (BSc) in Marine Biology.
  • Current coxswain and commercial (scientific) (ADAS qualifications) diving certificate.
  • Demonstrated experience in scientific diving, dive coordinating and diving fieldwork.
  • Experience in laboratory analysis, data entry and record keeping.
  • The ability to travel for field work and projects for up to 2-4 weeks at a time.
  • Strong oral and written communication and interpersonal skills and ability to work effectively in a team environment.
