CSIRO’s Diagnostic Molecular team forms part of the Diagnosis, Surveillance and Response Program at the Australian Centre for Disease Preparedness (ACDP).  This program provides diagnostic and research capability for the investigation of emergency diseases affecting livestock and other animals.
 

As a Molecular Diagnostics Technician at the ACDP, you will work within the microbiologically secure Molecular Diagnostics (PCR) laboratory and perform day-to-day routine molecular diagnostic assays under NATA/ISO 17025 accreditation.  You will contribute to the development/re-development and validation of PCR based molecular diagnostic assays and ensure laboratory Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) are kept up-to-date.  As part of this key role, you will undertake ‘on-call’ or after-hours diagnostic duties (as required) and contribute to research projects and other DSR program activities.  You will also provide additional assistance to other diagnostic teams within the program which will enable multi-skilling in a range of scientific specialties. 
 

The appointee must be able to meet ACDP’s microbiological security and security assessment requirements.

In this role you will:

 

  • Work within BSL3 laboratories to perform day-to-day routine molecular diagnostic PCR assays and ‘on-call’ duties under ISO 17025 accreditation.
  • Perform development/re-development and validation of PCR based molecular diagnostic assays.
  • Cross-train and participate in a range of research and technical activities.
  • Contribute to laboratory quality assurance. 
  • Work independently or collaboratively with colleagues on assigned research and development activities.
  • Respond to client requests, maintaining clear communication regarding mutual expectations.

 

Location:      Geelong – Australian Centre for Disease Preparedness (ACDP), Victoria
Salary:           AU$66k - AU$84k per annum, plus up to 15.4% superannuation

To be considered you will need:

 

  • A Bachelor of Science degree or equivalent relevant experience in Biological Sciences or a related discipline. 
  • Experience conducting and coordinating laboratory-based diagnostic tests under a quality management system ISO17025 in a PC3 laboratory.
  • Knowledge and technical skills in relation to diagnostic conventional and real-time PCR.
  • Experience in high-throughput sample processing including automated nucleotide extraction platforms and workflows for molecular testing. 
  • High-level interpersonal and communication skills.
  • The ability to work both independently and co-operatively as a member of a larger project team. 
  • Experience with LIMS (Laboratory Information Management System).
