Job Description

The Gnotobiotics Facility of the BRU has an opening for a full time Research Technician to participate in studies focusing on the role of the vast diversity of commensal microbes that live in and on us. The core maintains and breeds germ-free (i.e. sterile) animals that are then colonized with defined microbes. The employee occupying this position will provide basic research support under the general guidance of the manager and PI for projects utilizing germfree and gnotobiotic (colonized with defined microbiota, including BSL2 agents) mice.

Under the supervision and guidance of the Research Staff Investigator or Technologist, performs the following functions: performs laboratory techniques and procedures required for experimental studies projects as assigned, assists with establishing and scheduling various procedures and analysis, conducts tests and procedures utilizing various laboratory equipment and instrumentation, assembles experimental results for review by various staff, and orders laboratory supplies and equipment.

Responsibilities:

•Performs laboratory techniques procedures required for experimental studies.

•Performs technical lab duties as delegated by the Research Staff Supervisor related to the assigned project. Schedules and performs the various analysis needed to complete the project.

•Assists with establishing and scheduling of various procedures and analysis.

•Prepares reagents, purifies chemicals using chromatography, distillation, etc., identifies, separates and quantifies various substances.

•Conducts tests and procedures utilizing various laboratory equipment and instrumentation.

•Accumulates data from analyses, prepares charts, graphs, statistical tables for presentation to Research Staff Supervisor for final analysis and preparation for publication, grant proposals and applications for research funds.

•Potentially orders laboratory supplies and equipment.

•Other duties as assigned.

Specific duties in the Gnotobiotics Facility / Hajjar Lab will include:

•Provides custodial care, fresh feed, and fresh water to gnotobiotic mice according to standard operating procedures, including preparation and autoclaving of supplies

•Maintains animal colonies, including animal procurement, colony/line maintenance, and cage inventory

•Performs established mouse microbial transplantation assays and tissue harvests

•Performs molecular biology techniques including PCR analysis, qRT-PCR, plasmid preps, sequencing, western blotting, and cDNA cloning

•Organizes and maintains detailed notes on all procedures and autoclave readouts

Education:

•Knowledge of basic laboratory procedures, techniques, methods and analysis sufficient to perform a variety of research protocols; basic knowledge of quantitative and statistical methods normally attained through completion of a Bachelor's Degree in a biological science major or a related field of study.

•Bachelor’s degree in a biological science or related field of study strongly preferred.

Certifications:

•None required.

Complexity of Work:

•Requires critical thinking skills, decisive judgment and the ability to work with minimal supervision.

•Must be able to work in a stressful environment and take appropriate action.

Work Experience:

•A minimal amount of applicable experience may be considered to offset up to one year of the college degree requirements.

•After selection and placement into this position, up to six months of on-the-job training required to become familiar with laboratory techniques, procedures and research protocols.

Candidates with at least one year experience in a research or related laboratory environment preferred.

Strong preference for candidates with at least one year of experience handling mice in the research environment.

Physical Requirements:

•Ability to lift and transport supplies, equipment, and/or animals weighing up to 50 pounds; frequent standing, bending, and walking; must be able to tolerate unpleasant odors, sights, animal bites, and scratches

•May be required to stand for long periods of time

•Normal physical requirements include good near visual acuity and color acuity

Personal Protective Equipment:

•Follows standard precautions using personal protective equipment as required.

•Personal protective equipment in the Gnotobiotics facility requires employees to wear a Powered Air-Purifying Respirator (PAPR) which requires medical clearance.
