Cleveland Clinic has added additional spots to our 2022 Nurse Associate Externship!

Applicants must be available June 6 - August 13. Our program requires Full-time (40 hour per week) participation, with open availability (including day/ night/ weekends) during the 10 week program duration.

WEST - Lutheran Hospital (Cleveland, OH)

Qualifications for programs:

1) Must be active nursing student entering final year/semester in BSN or BSN/MN program (graduating Fall 2022 or Spring 2023).

2) Have, or be willing to obtain prior to program start, Basic Life Support (BLS) certification through the American Heart Association (AHA). No other BLS certification will be accepted. Certification must be valid through the duration of the program upon the program start date.

Selection process:

1) All applications will be reviewed to ensure above qualifications are met. If we cannot determine anticipated graduation date from application/resume, application will be closed.

2) Qualified applicants will be contacted via phone and text by a Cleveland Clinic Nurse Recruiter to discuss their interests and preferences and scheduled for a virtual interview with a nurse manager.

3) Candidates will be contacted by their Nurse Recruiter within 1 business day post-manager interview with an update regarding their applicant status.

Job Summary:

Under the supervision of an RN performs basic patient care activities. Assists with skills specifically identified on skills checklists for which training and competency has been established. These may include but not limited to vital signs, weights, assisting patients with personal care and activities of daily living and patient transfers/transport. Ten week program and candidate would need to attend required classes. Maybe eligible for PCNA role at completion of program.


  • Assists patients with tending to personal care, activities of daily living and transfers/transport.
  • Reports abnormal findings or changes in physical, mental and emotional conditions to RN.
  • Assists with keeping patient rooms clean and orderly.
  • Maintains personal growth and development through the ongoing process of formal and informal education.
  • Demonstrates a positive, concerned and sensitive response in the workplace.
  • Ability to read, write and speak English and to follow oral and written instructions.
  • Good interpersonal skills to interact with patients and staff.
  • Ability to perform basic mathematics.
  • Other duties as assigned.


  • Enrolled in an accredited BSN Nursing school with less than one year until graduating.


  • Basic Life Support (BLS) through American Heart Association (AHA).

Complexity of Work:

  • Requires critical thinking skills, decisive judgment and the ability to work with minimal supervision.
  • Must be able to work in a stressful environment and take appropriate action.

Work Experience:

  • None required.

Physical Requirements:

  • Requires full body motion to move and lift patients, manual finger dexterity with good eye-hand coordination; involves extensive standing and walking.

Personal Protective Equipment:

  • Follows standard precautions using personal protective equipment as required.
