The lab of Dr. Kyle Eagen ( at Baylor College of Medicine focuses on elucidating how DNA folds within cells and how DNA misfolding relates to human disease. Baylor College of Medicine is widely recognized for its exceptional, innovative, and collaborative research environment, and is investing significant resources in expanding interdisciplinary research in the molecular, cellular, and genetic bases of human health and disease. Dr. Eagen’s lab is dedicated to state-of-the-art molecular research using interdisciplinary approaches, the newest of technologies, and the education and training of the next generation of scientists and physician scientists. The lab is located in the Texas Medical Center, the largest biomedical complex in the world, immediately adjacent to Houston’s vibrant Museum District and Hermann Park.

A Research Technician position is available immediately in the laboratory of Dr. Kyle Eagen in the Department of Molecular and Cellular Biology. The research technician will expand upon a dynamic research program dedicated to understanding the molecular basis of 3D genome folding and nuclear organization. Research Technician will be responsible for taking on highly interdisciplinary projects and key functions in this endeavor, including projects focusing on molecular and cellular biology, as well as genomics approaches using next-generation DNA sequencing technology. The technician will work side-by-side with Dr. Eagen to develop cutting-edge scientific skills as the lab expands into new research areas.

Research Technician will be highly motivated, well organized, manage time effectively, and can work independently as well as part of a team. Previous experience with molecular biology and/or biochemistry is essential for this position.

Job Duties

  • Follows overall research objectives and protocols to design, set-up, conduct, and troubleshoot experiments.
  • Conducts experimental research lab work and assists in the design of one or more specific phases of entire projects.
  • Evaluates protocols and data obtained from experiments and recommends changes to processes, procedures and techniques to improve the quality and validity of results based on project objectives.
  • Completes mathematical calculations and/or computer analysis. Assists in analyzing and judging validity of data.
  • Completes experimental research:
    • Molecular Biology
      • Isolates and purifies DNA, RNA, and/or protein
      • PCR and RT-PCR
      • Prepares plasmids
      • Clones, maps, and sequences DNA
    • Cellular Biology
      • Cell culture, transfection, and transgene expression
      • CRISPR/Cas9 gene editing
      • Functional studies
  • Administrative
    • Maintains detailed records of research experiments and other laboratory related data including collecting, recording, summarizing, analyzing and interpreting research data.
    • Prepares charts and graphs for presentations and publications.
    • Looks for and evaluates scientific literature in support of research projects.
    • Tracks and summarizes lab supply expenses and verify accuracy of invoices.
    • Orders and maintains inventory of laboratory reagents and supplies.
    • Writes portions of grant applications, manuscripts, and publications.
    • Co-authors scientific papers.
  • Follows appropriate protocols, policies, procedures, regulations and Good Laboratory Practices.
  • Interacts effectively with team members to make important contributions on big problems while ensuring a high standard of laboratory organization.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in a Basic Science or related field. Four years of related experience may substitute for degree requirement.
  • No experience required.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with molecular biology and/or biochemistry is essential.
  • Successful completion of a bachelor’s or master’s degree in Biology or Chemistry.
  • Demonstrates laboratory experience.
  • Demonstrates ability to follow detailed research protocols and to learn new technologies.
  • Outstanding interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to work independently and in a team environment.
  • A record of taking initiative to solve problems and working to high-quality standards.
  • Attention to detail and accurate record keeping.
  • Ability to multitask, work and learn independently, and be self-motivated.
