We are currently looking for an experienced and driven Senior Electrical Engineer, with a passion in coding and programming electrical systems & circuits, to join our CSIRO Energy team!

You will become part of CSIRO’s dynamic ‘Thermal and Electrochemical Technologies’ Group, which executes applied research & development in the areas of battery storage, hydrogen related technologies, biomass gasification processes, and renewable fuels-based IC engines. The team collaborates with various public and private sector industry partners (such as government organisations and leading automotive companies) to build, test and install battery prototype units and explore the battery recycling technology. 

In this role, you will lead & conduct the development, and the construction & testing of electronic hardware for specific battery & hybrid energy systems and their respective prototype units. You will also play a lead role in the testing & evaluation of battery and other energy storage technologies for performance. Another key aspect of your role will be to utilise your leadership and stakeholder management skills in leading project teams and in initiating & maintaining collaborative and sustainable relationships with key external clients and industry partners. 

This is a hands-on role, and would be a great opportunity to work with a multi-disciplinary team of R&D specialists, engineers and external industry experts, to grow and develop your specialist skills in electronics and battery technology!

Your duties will include:

  • Leading and developing system prototype and hardware construction, including breadboarding designs, construction of electronic systems, testing and evaluation.
  • Being responsible for the programming/coding work involved in prototype development.
  • Leading a small team and/or collaborating with staff from other teams in work that have unique or unusual features and complications, requiring the design & development of original technologies and/or the development of original experimental techniques and insightful interpretation of data.
  • Participating in project scoping and planning, by generating ideas in support of existing and further research and making significant contributions to the technological direction.
  • Initiating and maintaining collaborative relationships with external parties, with the aim to transfer technology to industry.
  • Managing the laboratory day-to-day operations, laboratory and equipment maintenance, including safe working instructions (SWI) and preventive maintenance schedules for the safe operation of laboratory equipment.

Salary: AU$117K to AU$138K pa + up to 15.4% superannuation

To be considered you will need:

  • Relevant trade certificate/diploma/bachelor’s degree, or equivalent combination of relevant qualifications and work experience, in electronics engineering and electrical systems.
  • Demonstrated understanding of electrical control systems such as PLC, HMI, battery management systems (BMS), micro controller programming etc.
  • Proven proficiency with various equipment and software such as (or equivalent) Altium Designer, Automation Organiser, Arduino IDE, Visio Professional, etc.
  • Demonstrated high level of initiative, ingenuity and skills to solve complex technological problems, and independence in identifying and characterising technological challenges.
  • Demonstrated experience in liaising with clients and leading project teams, including collaborating with and supervising people with varying skills and backgrounds.
  • Experience working with prototype construction & electrical systems testing, and a valid licence to carry out electrical work, would be highly desirable.
