The Opportunity

  • Do you have a PhD in ecological modelling, remote sensing, machine learning, or data analytics?
  • Want to conduct world class research and development with a team of dedicated professionals?
  • Join CSIRO – Australia’s leading scientific research organisation!

CSIRO Early Research Career (CERC) Postdoctoral Fellowships provide opportunities to scientists and engineers who have completed their doctorate and have less than three years of relevant postdoctoral work experience. These fellowships aim to develop the next generation of future leaders of the innovation system.

We are seeking a PhD qualified Spatial Modeller or Remote Sensing Analyst to join the Quantitative Biodiversity Assessment Team. The ideal candidate will have practical experience in spatial ecological modelling, remote sensing, spatiotemporal statistics, vegetation ecology, and data integration as well as advanced programming skills.

Supported by a team of experts, the candidate will develop a particular area of transformative technology which has been identified as vital to enabling rapid response to ecosystem change for more effective and efficient biodiversity management. The novel approach to be developed by the candidate will combine high-performance analytics with ongoing advances in Earth observation data-streams, to provide dynamic monitoring of changes in the condition of biodiversity habitat across Australia.

Your duties will include:

  • Conceptualising and developing a new approach to dynamic habitat condition monitoring based on remote sensing, involving collaboration with cross-domain CSIRO scientists.
  • Identifying and harnessing a range of new statistical analysis techniques and data sources in developing science solutions to the key challenges of dynamic habitat condition monitoring.
  • Recognising and utilising opportunities for innovation and the generation of new theoretical perspectives, and progressing opportunities for the further development or creation of new lines of research.
  • Working with stakeholders and collaborators (e.g. Department of Agriculture, Water and the Environment; Geoscience Australia; State agencies) in planning and implementing research that meets the needs of potential users.
  • Participating as an active member of CSIRO Land and Water’s Quantitative Biodiversity Assessment Team, and the Habitat Condition Assessment System project team.

Location: Canberra, ACT

Salary: AU$89k - AU$98k plus up to 15.4% superannuation

Tenure: Specified term of 3 years

Reference: 82461

To be considered you will need:

  • A doctorate (or will shortly satisfy the requirements of a PhD) in a relevant discipline area, such as spatial ecological or environmental modelling, or ecological applications using remote sensing, machine learning, data analytics, or similar.  Please note: To be eligible for this role you must have no more than 3 years (full-time equivalent) of postdoctoral research experience.
  • Demonstrated experience in spatial ecological modelling and/or spatiotemporal environmental data analysis.
  • Proficiency in advanced spatial statistical analysis of large datasets using programming languages such as Python, R, or similar.
  • Knowledge and research experience in Australian ecosystems is very highly regarded.
