Job Description


We are seeking a Research Coordinator III in the department of neurosurgery clinical research mission area.  One principal responsibility will be supporting a 5 year NIH-funded study to advance spinal cord stimulation (an implanted device) for the treatment of pain. This trial involves device development in partnership with a large medical device company, and hence the research coordinator will be responsible for managing processes with the FDA, NIH, and IRB.  The study also involves a human clinical trial, and the research coordinator is responsible for screening patients, scheduling tests and procedures as required by the studies, and working directly with the patients.  

The Research Coordinator will also be involved in the launching of any new studies in the department and partnering with the Principal Investigator to ensure the studies are set up correctly and appropriately recorded.  The position will handle assigned studies but will also oversee all regulatory documents and records for each study are appropriately maintained, accurate and up-to-date.  The research coordinator may be responsible for supervising and/or overseeing the activities of less experienced research personnel, by training them in the regulatory responsibilities for their respective studies.  

Job Duties

  • Manages submissions and communications with the IRB, FDA, and NIH.
  • Manages recruitment and screening of participants for trial enrollment.
  • Maintains correspondence with subjects before, during, and after enrollment, including scheduling visits between participants and research team members, per protocol and as needed.
  • Schedules tests and procedures as required by the studies.
  • Maintains data collected throughout the trial and ensures study records are kept up-to-date and in compliance with regulatory requirements.
  • Inputs data in proper databases and physical study binders.
  • Manages proper research billing throughout the trial, including billing from BSLMC and BCM.
  • Launches any new studies in the department, and partners with the Principal Investigator to ensure the studies are set up correctly and everything is appropriately recorded.    
  • Trains less experienced coordinators in the regulatory responsibilities for their respective studies.  

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in a related field. Four years of related experience may substitute for degree requirement.
  • Two years of relevant experience.

Preferred Qualifications

  • An interest in neurosciences and neurosurgery, along with an interest in interacting with patients.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication.
  • The ability to prioritize and manage multiple tasks needed for successful completion of a project.
