Job posting number: #7090291
Posted: December 7, 2021
Application Deadline: Open Until Filled
Job DescriptionAbout the Department
The Department of Plant and Microbial Biology supports teaching, research, and extension programs in fundamental plant biology and microbiology, including basic and applied research, teaching graduate and undergraduate courses, mentoring graduate and undergraduate students, and outreach to state and nation.
Essential Job Duties
The Department of Plant and Microbial Biology (PMB) in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences at North Carolina State University (NCSU) invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor in Microbial Physiology. Applications are invited from all qualified candidates with research interests in molecular aspects of microbial physiology of either model or non-model prokaryotes.
The appointee will be expected to extend and complement the research focus of the existing microbiologists in PMB in areas that currently include: applied biotechnology, bioremediation, microbial metabolism, genomics and proteomics, bacteriophage, extremophiles, and host and non-host associated microbiomes.
The position will be a 9-month appointment with main responsibilities divided between research (75%) and teaching (25%). The appointee will be expected to develop a vigorous externally funded research program and support the training of undergraduate and graduate students. Teaching topics will depend on the individual’s areas of expertise but are expected to include a graduate course in prokaryotic physiology. NCSU provides a highly collaborative and supportive environment, and the appointee will have opportunities to collaborate with faculty in different colleges (e.g., Veterinary Medicine, Engineering, Sciences), departments (e.g., Biochemistry, Food, Nutrition and Bioprocessing Science, Chemistry, and Biological and Agricultural Engineering), and other local institutions (e.g., Duke, UNC-Chapel Hill, NC A&T, NC Central University…).
NC State is also home to many centers, research groups of interest, and training initiatives promoting academic excellence and fostering interdisciplinary collaboration. Some of them include the Comparative Medicine Institute, the Center for Integrated Fungal Research, the Excellence Clusters in Bioinformatics and the Microbiomes and Complex Microbial Communities, the cross-disciplinary Microbiology Graduate Program, and the Genetics and Genomic Training Initiative, among others. Additionally, the close proximity of NCSU to the Research Triangle Park (RTP) provides many opportunities for interactions and collaborations with industry partners.
N.C. State is diverse because it is a community of individuals from varied backgrounds and demographic categories; it encourages, accepts, and values a diversity of people and ideas; it seeks to promote an environment where equity, respect, and understanding represent the norm in the campus climate; and it seeks to prepare entrepreneurs who are effective citizens of a global community. As such, you are expected to contribute to an environment that is welcoming of all groups.
Perform other duties as assigned by the department head.
