Job Description

Summary

This is a full-time position in Texas Children’s Hospital (TCH)/Baylor College of Medicine (BCM) Psychology Division on behavioral research studies of management of pediatric type 1 diabetes. The Senior Research Coordinator will oversee conduct of multiple studies in coordination with the PI, and will coordinate day to day activities of clinical research protocols, including screening, enrollment, and monitoring of research participants. The Senior Research Coordinator will ensure accurate data collection, documentation, organization, and safety of research participants. The candidate will also engage in data management, participant recruitment/retention, and delivering brief manual-based behavioral intervention sessions to study participants. The Senior Research Coordinator will also coordinate conduct of the study locally with other study sites, and will supervise, schedule, and direct the activities of less experienced research personnel.

 

Study activities will take place at multiple TCH/BCM locations in the Houston metro area. The candidate must be able to travel between those locations. Mileage for travel between locations and parking expenses will be reimbursed. 

Job Duties

  • Study oversight and management:
    • Provides general oversight of study conducted at Texas Children’s Hospital site and coordinatesn with study staff at collaborating external sites.
    • Interviews, screens, and recruits patients/families for studies; explains processes and procedures to educate participant regarding research study.
    • Conducts informed consent and assent procedures,
    • Corresponds with patient throughout study participation. 
    • Travels to other TCH sites for study recruitment and study visits with participants is often needed (mileage paid).
  • Data collection and management:
    • Collects patient information processes documents and enters information into study database.
    • Collects, cleans, and manages survey data.
    • Collects patient data from medical devices and electronic medical record reviews.
    • Collects, processes, ships, and maintains paperwork for blood and/or biological specimens according to procedures outlined in study protocol.
    • Delivers brief behavioral intervention protocols in-person or virtually per study protocol.
    • Develops and maintains databases in BCM CTMS system, Microsoft Excel, and RedCAP.
    • Maintains records and regulatory documents and records for research studies, including IRB protocols and other regulatory requirements.
  • Collaboration with external partners:
    • Communicates with collaborating investigators internally at BCM/TCH and externally at other study sites, as well as external consultants, data safety & monitoring board (DSMB) members, and others. 
  • Grant writing and publications:
    • Conducts research literature searches and assists with manuscript/grant preparation. Participates as an author on conference abstracts and paper publications.
  • Patient contact:
    • Maintains contact with patients/families for study recruitment and activities, including by telephone, email, and in busy outpatient and inpatient medical settings. 
  • Required training:
    • Completes all required training modules related to the Responsible Conduct of Research (e.g., CITI Program training).
  • Learns about type 1 diabetes by observing patient/family diabetes care and completing readings and tutorials with Marisa Hilliard, Ph.D., Principal Investigator, and other diabetes experts at TCH. 
  • Learns to use the electronic medical record to identify and track patients and to conduct chart reviews.
  • Learns how to recruit and enroll eligible families, and to obtain informed consent for behavioral research.
  • Learns to collect and manage data from questionnaires, diabetes-related devices, and electronic medical records. 
  • Learns to deliver a brief behavioral intervention to parents of children with diabetes.
  • Learns to complete required compliance-related documentation for behavioral research.
  • Learns to develop an organizational system for managing all aspects of study implementation. 
  • Learns to work independently and as part of a larger study team.
  • Learns about considerations of diversity, equity, and inclusion in relation to biomedical/behavioral research processes. 
  • Provides oversight to other coordinators.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in a Basic Science or related field. Four years of related experience may substitute for degree requirement.
  • Five years of relevant experience.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s degree.
  • Previous experience interacting with children and families and/or experience in health care settings.
  • Prior experience with Microsoft Excel.
  • RedCAP and electronic health record experience.
