Are you looking for an opportunity to contribute to R&D for the next generation of power sources for nuclear deterrence and beyond? Do you have a passion for problem solving, cross-functional collaboration, and developing new technologies? We are seeking a highly motivated postdoctoral scholar to conduct research and development on critical power source materials and devices. Our department has cradle-to-grave responsibilities within the Power Sources Technology Group (PSTG) at Sandia for Nuclear Deterrence (ND) customers and beyond, and this position carries the opportunity to impact our technologies along many points of their life cycles. Specifically, you will apply strong experimental skills to investigate materials synthesis, thermal transport, electrochemistry, energy harvesting, thermoelectrics, miniaturization, and early-stage novel power source prototyping. Most work will be experimental in nature, however, strong skills in data analysis and experience working with modelers will be beneficial. Previous experience with power generation and energy storage materials is not required, however you should be both willing and, with appropriate training, capable of safely working with hazardous materials. On any given day, you may be called on to: + Work both independently and as a member of a team. + Conduct investigations involving material synthesis, electrochemistry, and power sources prototyping. + Support existing projects and develop new efforts in power sources materials science research. + Work in a dynamic team environment and manage time according to work demands.
+ PhD in chemical engineering, chemistry, materials science and engineering, mechanical engineering, physics, or related field. + Experience with materials synthesis and characterization of structure, chemistry, and/or mechanical behavior of materials.
+ Strong theoretical knowledge base in electrochemistry, thermodynamics, and heat transport. + Good communication skills evidenced by a record of publishing in the peer-reviewed scientific literature and presentations at technical conferences. + Experience with laboratory analytical techniques, including electron microscopy, energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS), X-ray microscopy/computed tomography, X-ray diffraction, etc. + Proven track record of working with computational modelers + Ability to work effectively both independently and in an interdisciplinary team + Experience in handling energetic and other hazardous materials + Active DOE “L” or “Q” clearance
