Job Description


The Research Associate will perform high complexity molecular tests, develop and perform advanced, molecular-based skillsets, interpret complex data, and effectively troubleshoot technological issues. Will also collaborate and work with clinical diagnostic laboratories adhering to CAP and Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments (CLIA) guidelines. 

Job Duties

  • Produces and develops various complex molecular biology experiments.
  • Sample preparation for Next Generation Sequencing (NGS) across multiple pipelines beginning from DNA/RNA isolation up to sequencing and analysis.
  • Develops new protocols in the lab regarding cutting edge molecular biology technologies.
  • Works with the team to process samples in the production pipeline, as well as research projects, including protocol development and optimization.
  • Interprets, communicates and troubleshoots problematic results.
  • Updates sample tracking information and summarizes results in an appropriate format.
  • Follows policies and procedures as they relate to quality control (QC): reagent storage/stability, calibration schedule/requirements, review QC/test results, corrective action, etc.
  • Analyzes Data.
  • Interprets Data.
  • Compiles research data and submit results to PI for inclusion in publications, grants or protocols.
  • Presents findings of research projects to laboratory members during laboratory meetings.
  • Adheres to CAP/CLIA and HIPAA compliance, laboratory safety, and OSHA policies and procedures.
  • Follows laboratory quality control policies.
  • Documents all quality control activities.
  • Monitors and maintains reagents, log records and laboratory equipment.
  • Able to lift up to 30 lbs with light, physical exertion. 

Minimum Qualifications

  • Master's degree in Basic Science or a related field.  Experience in lieu of degree will not be accepted.
  • Three years of relevant experience typically as a Research Assistant, Research Technician or Postdoctoral Fellow/Associate.

Preferred Qualifications

  • MB (ASCP) Certified.
  • Expertise in one or more of the following molecular biology areas is essential: DNA and RNA manipulations such as purification and qualification, PCR, qPCR and restriction enzyme digestion.
  • NGS library construction such as RNASeq and Whole Genome Sequencing.
  • Previous experience in a CAP/CLIA/New York State laboratory setting.
  • Four years of related experience may substitute for degree requirement.
