Job DescriptionA Postdoctoral position in Computational Immunology is available in the Department of Hematopoietic Biology and Malignancy, The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center, Houston, TX, United States. This position reports to Dr. Shukla in the Department of Hematopoietic Biology and Malignancy and Department of Immunology.
The Shukla lab is a highly translational group focused on antigen discovery and development of personalized immunotherapies. We build computational approaches and harness state-of-the-art technologies and experimental assays to elucidate mechanisms underlying immunogenicity, immune escape and clinical outcomes to cancer immunotherapy.
We are currently recruiting a highly motivated Postdoctoral Fellow with a strong computational background and a deep desire to address critical bottlenecks in cancer immunotherapy through methodological innovation. The fellow will develop novel tools for characterization, somatic variation detection and quantification of key genetic elements in the cancer-immunity cycle through analysis of data from bulk and single-cell sequencing platforms. While the primary focus will be algorithmic advancement, the fellow will also work with software engineers in order to produce well-documented, version-controlled and user-friendly software. The fellow will work closely with experimental collaborators in the department to iteratively improve and validate the newly developed methods. The candidate will play a key role in deploying these tools in high-impact research and clinical settings across the institute.
Dr. Shukla is deeply committed to the professional fulfillment and career advancement of all trainees. He will work on creating a successful transition plan to either academia or industry in accordance with the fellow's evolving preferences. The fellow will have access to computational and immunological platforms, expertise and mentoring advice from researchers in the ECLIPSE Moon Shot Research platform where Dr. Shukla will serve as the Computational Director. The candidate will also benefit from collaborations with Broad Institute members with a strong track record in creating widely used tools for cancer genome analysis.
We are looking for an enthusiastic, self-motivated, independent thinker with a tremendous work ethic. The position will require great planning and organizational skills. An ability to work well with others as part of a cohesive team, take initiative, and creatively problem solve are a must.
Individuals with a PhD degree in Computational Biology, Bioinformatics, Statistics, Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Physics or related fields. The ideal candidate will have a solid knowledge of genomic sequence analysis methods such as de Bruijn graphs, suffix arrays, contig assembly, mutation and copy number detection. A proven track record in developing computational biology tools is required. Experience with implementing at least one sequencing-based method is highly desirable. Prior background in single-cell analysis is helpful but not required. A knowledge of object-oriented programming concepts is expected. Knowledge of immunology is preferable. Proven track record of publications, excellent written and oral communication skills are required. Partial or fully remote work options can be considered for exceptional applicants.
