As the Network Architect on the Network Operations team you will have the chance to help build and support Harvard Medical School’s mission-critical network. We are looking for a passionate person that wants to build great things, is both innovative and methodical, is team focused and understands that we are in the business of providing a great customer experience to our research community, students, faculty and staff. In this role, we expect you to have expert level knowledge (and hands-on experience) of complex networking systems at every level. We would look to you to help architect and implement new solutions that move massive amounts of data, and to redesign existing solutions to be more efficient. The HMS network provides 100GbE redundant connectivity between on campus buildings and our data centers.
Design, Implement, and maintain mission-critical and scalable network infrastructure
Architect expansion of LAN services to AWS, Azure, and other research institutions using BGP
Vonfigure/Troubleshoot Palo Alto firewalls as needed including S2S VPN, NAT, and HA
Review existing network designs and help identify areas to continue to build upon or improve
Help troubleshoot network issues in any manifestation and document resolution
Provide advanced/expert level support to Network Operations to resolve incidents
Prepare and maintain network diagrams, technical specifications, and system documentation using Visio and other software
Work to establish design principles and standards for all network components and configurations
Assist in the evaluation of vendor proposals with respect to the hardware, communications protocols, switching and in the procurement of software and equipment
Follow best practices for architecture, engineering, and implementation
Work closely with our network security team to develop and implement security throughout the network including web proxy architecture
Plan, Stage, Test and verify all changes to ensure changes occur without interruption
Adhere to established change control policies and procedures
Rack, stack and configure network hardware where needed
Assist the Research Computing team with our HPC environment
Knowledge of fiber types and connections
Ability to analyze packet captures
Strong troubleshooting ability
Participate in a 7x24 on-call rotation
Ability to lift 50 lbs

Minimum of seven years’ post-secondary education or relevant work experience
Additional Qualifications and Skills
Bachelor's degree, or equivalent professional experience, required. Seven plus years of IT experience, and 10 year's relevant industry experience.
Cisco Certified Internetwork Expert (CCIE) preferred but not required.
Commitment to customer service; ability to work in a demanding, fast paced environment; record of keeping abreast of industry trends and changes in technologies; team orientation, flexibility.
Strong organizational skills, communication skills (written, oral and presentation); a concern for accuracy, details and quality.
Occasionally required to work outside of normal business hours, and may be called during off hours
