Any concerns about the ability to meet this requirement should be directed to HR Solutions at (505) 284-4700. : We are seeking a postdoctoral researcher to collaborate with a multidisciplinary community of senior researchers in the Hydrogen Effects on Materials Laboratory (HEML) within the Hydrogen and Materials Science Department (8367)! The HEML team develops comprehensive understanding of fatigue, fracture and failure of structural materials. Our research emphasizes experimental studies of the interactions of gas-phase hydrogen and hydrogen isotopes with structural metals and welds, using unique, custom facilities for performing experiments in high pressure gaseous environments. The research is performed in large teams that include daily interactions with microscopists, surface scientists and computational scientists, all operating at multiple length scales. Our research activities have high visibility both nationally and internationally, thus successful candidates require strong presentation and writing skills.

Required:
+ A PhD in materials science, metallurgical or mechanical engineering, or a related field + Experience with fatigue and/or fracture of metals and metal alloys + Experience with mechanical test frames for tensile, fracture, and fatigue testing + A record of first-author or co-authored scientific publications

Desired:
+ Documented experience with microstructural characterization of structural metals using conventional and advanced microscopy and microanalysis techniques + Strong understanding of physical and mechanical metallurgy and knowledge of thermomechanical processing of steels and aluminum alloys + Familiarity with the effects of hydrogen on the behavior of structural materials: ferritic and austenitic steels and aluminum alloys + Experience with light sources and neutron diffraction to evaluate residual stress, microstructure, deformation and fracture + Comprehensive research approach
- ability to work with and leverage expertise in a diverse group of scientists and engineers + Excellent communication skills

Department Description:

The Hydrogen and Materials Science team provides expertise to both Sandia and the Nation on the interaction of hydrogen (and its isotopes) with all types of materials. In particular, the Department performs scientific and engineering research to advance hydrogen energy technologies and support Sandia’s NNSA mission for two primary customers: 1) Gas Transfer Systems (GTS) for the Nation's Nuclear Weapons Enterprise; and 2) the Hydrogen and Fuel Cell Technologies Office (HFTO), part of DOE's Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy. The Department’s work covers a broad range of areas, including analyzing hydrogen’s long-term impact on materials used in fuel cell and gas transfer systems, developing solar thermochemical technology for hydrogen production, assessing the suitability of materials for hydrogen storage, advising hydrogen safety codes and standards, maintaining and enhancing nationally recognized core and enabling capabilities in hydrogen science, and initiating hydrogen storage and fuel cell market transformation strategies to bring technological advancements towards broad-based commercial availability.

Security Clearance:

This position does not currently require a Department of Energy (DOE) security clearance. Sandia will conduct a pre-employment drug test and background review that includes checks of personal references, credit, law enforcement records, and employment/education verifications. Furthermore, employees in New Mexico need to pass a U.S. Air Force background screen for access to Kirtland Air Force Base. Substance abuse or illegal drug use, falsification of information, criminal activity, serious misconduct or other indicators of untrustworthiness can cause access to be denied or terminated, resulting in the inability to perform the duties assigned and subsequent termination of employment. If hired without a clearance and it subsequently becomes necessary to obtain and maintain one for the position, or you bid on positions that require a clearance, a pre-processing background review may be conducted prior to a required federal background investigation. Applicants for a DOE security clearance need to be U.S. citizens. If you hold more than one citizenship (i.e., of the U.S. and another country), your ability to obtain a security clearance may be impacted. Members of the workforce (MOWs) hired at Sandia who require uncleared access for greater than 179 days during their employment, are required to go through the Uncleared Personal Identity Verification (UPIV) process. Access includes physical and/or cyber (logical) access, as well as remote access to any NNSA information technology (IT) systems. UPIV requirements are not applicable to individuals who require a DOE personnel security clearance for the performance of their SNL employment or to foreign nationals. The UPIV process will include the completion of a USAccess Enrollment, SF-85 (Questionnaire for Non-Sensitive Positions) and OF-306 (Declaration of for Federal Employment). An unfavorable UPIV determination will result in immediate retrieval of the SNL issued badge, removal of cyber (logical) access and/or removal from SNL subcontract. All MOWs may appeal the unfavorable UPIV determination to DOE/NNSA immediately. If the appeal is unsuccessful, the MOW may try to go through the UPIV process one year after the decision date.
