Job Description


Position Highlights:

  • The Health Information Management ("HIM") HOSPITAL Coder reviews, analyzes and codes diagnoses and procedures information that uses ICD-9-Clinical Modification ("CM") and/or ICD-10-CM. Procedure Coding System ("PCS"), Current Procedural Terminology ("CPT"), or Evaluation and Management ("E&M") coding and/or Healthcare Common Procedure Coding ("HCPC") and/or Diagnosis Related Group ("DRG coding").

The Ideal Candidate

  • The ideal candidate will have previous coding experience within a cancer center
  • The ideal candidate will have an active coding certificaiton


  • Determine the proper codes and modifiers for all billable services utilizing CPT -4 and ICD9 CM and ICD10 CM and PCS code sets for outpatient and inpatient
  • Code for 100% of medical records/encounters for each assigned clinic or encounter type when available following discharge with 95% accuracy as demonstrated by coding audits
  • Identify and analyze problems or issues

Credentials and Education

·        Experience in coding inpatient and/or outpatients medical records.

·        High School Diploma/GED.

  • minimum of two (2) year's health care coding experience with ICD-9-CM and /or ICD-10-CM, PCS, CPT and DRG classification systems - with a  thorough understanding of the effect of data quality on prospective payment, utilization, and reimbursement for multiple medical specialties.*
  • *In lieu of experience, an Associates or Bachelors Degree in Health Information Management with ICD10 may be considered*

  • Coding Certification


Preferred qualifications include:


·         Associate's Degree in HIM or related Health Field.

·         Ambulatory Payment Classifications ("APC") knowledge.

·         Experience with coding oncology related services.

·         Competence in IDX, 3M and Cerner/Soarian.


Required certifications are as follows:

Certified Professional Coder ("CPC"), Certified Professional Coder- Hospital ("CPC-H"), Certified Coding Specialist ("CCS"), Certified Coding Specialist - Physician-based ("CCSP") Certification, Radiation Oncology Certification Coder ("ROCC"), Certified Interventional Radiology Coder ("CIRCC"),OR Any certification sponsored by the American Academy of Professional Coders ("AAPC"), Registered Health Information Technician ("RHIT"), or Registered Health Information Administrator ("RHIA"). Other accredited coding certifications may be considered.
