Job Description


The Chen laboratory is an adipose tissue research laboratory at Children’s Nutrition Research Center in the department of Pediatrics, Baylor college of Medicine. The main objective of our research is to study the contributions of brown/white adipocyte stem cells to metabolism under normal and pathological conditions, such as obesity, using a combination of genetic, molecular and cellular approaches. Currently, we have a research assistant position available.

Job Duties

  • Performs basic laboratory techniques including preparing chemical solutions, autoclaving solutions and biohazard materials, and pH calibration.
  • Performs molecular biology techniques including genomic and plasmid DNA extraction, mammalian cell and tissue RNA extraction, PCR, DNA gel electrophoresis, NanoDrop Spectrophotometer DNA and RNA quantification, real-time quantitative PCR, protein isolation, SDS page electrophoresis, and western bolting.
  • Performs cell biology techniques including cell culture media preparation, primary cell isolation from adipose tissue, mammalian cell line and primary cell culture, DNA transfection, flow cytometry analysis, multicolor fluorescence-activated cell sorting, fluorescence staining of cells, and operate cell imaging with inverted microscope and upright fluorescence microscopes.
  • Performs histological techniques including adipose tissue isolation, processing, and cryotome and microtome sectioning, H&E staining, immunohistochemistry, and tissue imaging.
  • Performs metabolic assays including body weight measurement, glucose tolerance tests, insulin tolerance tests, and mouse body temperature measurement with a rectal thermometer and CLAMS.
  • Performs mouse husbandry and surgical procedures including mouse colony breeding, mouse weaning, plug checking, PCR genotyping, intraperitoneal injection, perfusion, cell transplantation, mouse anesthesia, stereotaxic microinjection, and optogenetic manipulation.
  • Performs data analyses and documentation with Word, Excel, Power point, Adobe Illustrator, Adobe Photoshop, and scientific graphing software (ex. GraphPad Prism).

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in a Basic Science or a related field.
  • Two years of relevant experience.

Preferred Qualifications

  • MS degree, knowledge in physiology, molecular and cellular biology, adipose tissue biology, and neuroscience and be familiar with mouse genetic manipulation and mouse husbandry.
  • Proficiency in mouse surgical techniques, specifically stereotaxic microinjection.
  • One or more years of recent laboratory experience, and excellent communication and laboratory management skills.
