Job DescriptionThe University of Tennessee College of Medicine invites applications and nominations for the position of Dean of the College of Medicine, University of Tennessee Health Science Center (UTHSC), College of Medicine Chattanooga. The University of Tennessee College of Medicine is a four-campus system with Campus locations in Memphis, Knoxville, Nashville, and Chattanooga.
The Dean is the chief academic and administrative officer of the Chattanooga Campus of the College of Medicine and is responsible for the leadership of the school’s three-fold mission of excellence in education, patient care, and research. In addition to administrative oversight, the Dean serves as an effective consensus-builder and liaison between multiple constituencies, both internal and external to the College. The Dean is the key representative to alumni, donors, national organizations, and governmental agencies as well as to the Erlanger Health System. As a member of the UTHSC’s senior administrative team, the Dean reports directly to the Executive Dean of the College of Medicine for the UTHSC who is based in Memphis. In addition, the Dean is expected to work closely with the Deans of College of Medicine Campus locations in Memphis, Knoxville, and Nashville. Clinical Department Chairpersons report directly to the Dean along with the following offices: Medical Student Education, Graduate Medical Education, Business Office, Medical Library, Institutional Review Board, Information Technology, Compliance/Research Integrity, Student, Faculty, and Staff Affairs. A key facet of the Dean position is serving as Senior Vice-President in the Erlanger Health System (EHS). As the key executive working with the health system representing and overseeing employed faculty physicians, the Dean/SVP is critical to the success of the health system. Clinical integration, standardization of care, development of clinical pathways, incentive compensation plans will be important facets of the Dean/SVP’s role within the health system. Developing a positive working relationship between the university faculty and community physicians is essential for the College of Medicine and EHS.

Demonstrate extensive knowledge of and commitment to effective teaching, relevant research, and state-of-the-art clinical services.
Serve as a role model through inspiring teaching, quality patient care, and maintaining an active research agenda.
Be recognized nationally as a leader in her/his field of specialization.
Position Responsibilities in Leadership
Provide leadership to the faculty and staff in achieving the strategic mission including building a reputation as a national leader in academic medicine.
Lead departmental chairs and faculty to maintain full accreditation and produce excellent practitioners/ alumni from each residency training program.
Effectively recruit quality faculty and medical staff.
Work closely and collaboratively with the CEO, COO, and officers of the Erlanger Health System (EHS) in her/his capacity as Dean/SVP.
Establish and maintain well-organized, responsive operations for the College.
Build and maintain effective relationships with leaders in the medical community, the University of Tennessee, Oak Ridge National Lab, local health care industry, and the Middle Tennessee Community at large.
Effectively communicate the vision and strategies of the College to all its constituents.
In partnership with the EHS, generate new revenue from donors, corporate partners, and clinical endeavors.
Oversee College's clinical endeavors to ensure state-of-the-art medical services which function efficiently and in compliance with applicable regulatory requirements.
Work collaboratively with private physician practices associated with the Erlanger Medical Center to promote educational opportunities for residents and students.
Ensure the financial success of the College in managing revenue and expense.
Maintain the corporate compliance of the College and all other regulatory/legal requirements.
Ensure that the Chattanooga Campus of the College of Medicine meets all UTHSC policies and guidelines for the financial management of education and research efforts.
Maintain and enhance graduate medical education training programs on the Chattanooga Campus.
Be the advocate for employed physicians on the Chattanooga/EHS/UT-COM campus.
The Dean will model an exemplary on-going professional life through active participation in at least one of the following areas, as appropriate to his/her background, training, and expertise:
Teaching/Scholarly activity - Participate in teaching students and residents and maintain active membership in scholarly organizations at the state and national level.
Clinician - Maintain active privileges at the Erlanger Medical Center as well as a part-time clinical practice.
Research - Maintain participation in a research program in an area of expertise; publish research findings in peer-reviewed journals and other equivalent scholarly publications.
Required Position Qualifications
Hold an MD or DO degree.
Experience with the accreditation requirements of the LCME, and ACGME.
Excellent demonstrated skills in leadership, strategic planning, fiscal management, scholarly activity, communications, fund raising, and development of collaborative working relationships.
Desired Position Qualifications
National recognition in an area of expertise.
Minimum of 2 years experience in a substantial academic leadership position at the Chair, Assistant or Associate Dean level.
Demonstrated understanding of basic, transitional, and clinical medical research, including funding sources and regulatory requirements.
Evidence of scholarly activities appropriate for a faculty appointment as professor. Tenure status will be discussed with the selected candidate and awarded commensurate with their experience.
