Purpose of Position
The Department of Psychology at Christopher Newport University invites applications for two tenure-track positions in Psychology with the areas of specialization open, effective August 2022. Applicants must be committed to a teacher-scholar model, demonstrate the potential for outstanding teaching with a diverse group of students, and maintain a productive research program with a commitment to mentoring undergraduate students. The Department is particularly interested in candidates whose research interests intersect with topics related to diversity and equal opportunity. Teaching responsibilities would include teaching one of our core courses in introductory psychology, statistics, or research methods and courses in the candidates’ areas of expertise. The nominal teaching load for tenure track appointments is 3 courses per semester.

A Doctoral degree in Psychology or a closely related field is required for appointment at the rank of Assistant Professor. In some cases, exceptionally well-qualified candidates may be considered for appointment at a higher rank, and ABD candidates who will not hold the doctorate by the time of appointment may be considered for appointment at the rank of Instructor. Phi Beta Kappa membership is highly desirable.
Departmental Information
The Department of Psychology at Christopher Newport University includes 20 members (11 women and 9 men) who are dedicated teacher/scholars and actively engaged in mentoring students while working in a collegial atmosphere. The successful applicant will join a team of faculty that integrates high quality teaching and significant research involving undergraduates. The Psychology Department has 572 majors (approximately 11% of all majors at CNU) and 200 minors. With 21% of the Psychology majors identifying as Black, Asian, Hispanic, or Multi-Race, the Psychology Department is one of the most racially diverse on campus. The Department is housed in the College of Natural and Behavioral Sciences in the 21st century Mary Brock Forbes integrated science center with state of the art teaching and research spaces. The department supports and works collaboratively with the Interdisciplinary Neuroscience Program and the Master of Arts in Teaching program. In 2020, College Factual ranked the CNU Psychology Department as a Best Psychology Program (#56 out of 835; top 6.7%) nationwide.
