This position will maintain the enterprise data warehouse; provide database administrative support for Ball State’s enterprise database servers, including Redshift, Oracle and Microsoft SQL Servers; provide database solutions and support to clients of Enterprise Information Systems (EIS); effectively utilize the resource areas available within and outside of EIS in order to implement appropriate solutions that address the needs of clients. Help to ensure the high reliability and availability of applications running on local or remotely hosted enterprise systems.  Additionally, work with the ERP Administrators in Banner.

As the Database Administrator for Warehouse Systems, you’ll be responsible for managing the warehouse databases to ensure continuous uptime and fast response time. Your role will also work collaboratively with Institutional Research and Decision Support and others in the campus community to enhance warehouse systems to fit the needs of the university and support their data needs. Job Function:

This position will maintain the enterprise data warehouse; provide database administrative support for Ball State’s enterprise database servers, including Redshift, Oracle and Microsoft SQL Servers; provide database solutions and support to clients of Enterprise Information Systems (EIS); effectively utilize the resource areas available within and outside of EIS in order to implement appropriate solutions that address the needs of clients. Help to ensure the high reliability and availability of applications running on local or remotely hosted enterprise systems.  Additionally, work with the ERP Administrators in Banner. 

Minimum Education:

1. Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university by date of appointment, or 
2. Associate’s degree plus an additional combination of education or experience in IT equivalent to two years, or 
3. High school diploma or GED plus an additional combination of education or experience in IT equivalent to four years

Minimum Experience:

One year of demonstrated knowledge and experience in database server support, system analysis, design or application development.  Experience gained through professional employment or internship experience will count towards this requirement.  

Preferred Experience:

Relational database administration experience with Microsoft Oracle and/or SQL Server in an enterprise server environment.  Demonstrated competency in SQL or SQL-like languages and creating ETL/ELT packages or procedures. Data Warehousing, three or more years Redshift, Oracle or Microsoft SQL Server experience. Experience with Ellucian Banner systems, StarRez, Canvas, Tableau, or AWS. 

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Support the enterprise database server environment (Oracle and Microsoft SQL Servers), providing analysis, design, development, implementation, documentation, backup, restore and additional routine types of database support. 
  • Maintain database servers and software to ensure that it is up to date and configured with best practices as defined by the software vendor and university policies. 
  • Build and maintain a working knowledge of warehouse systems.   Support data management and reporting from the warehouse. 
  • Perform performance testing, monitoring, and analysis on databases and servers to ensure the smooth and efficient operation of all systems. 
  • Evolve existing systems, processes and procedures with best practices in database analysis, design, and creation.   Support process improvement within and outside of IT. 
  • Support creating and migrating ETL processes into production, and documenting system changes. 
  • Resolve data issues as directed by the supervisor and data stewards. 
  • Provide rapid incident response and speedy resolution for database problems. Document resolutions to incidents and prepare operational plans to ensure that the incident is not repeated. 
  • Establish and maintain working relationships with service providers, vendors, other IT departmental units and other areas of the university.
  • Support the use of appropriate information security controls to protect systems. Manage user access to all enterprise databases in accordance with the policies determined by the Director of Enterprise Information Systems.
  •  Perform other related duties as assigned.
