Job Description

Summary

The research assistant in the Division of Cardiothoracic Surgery will work within the Aortic Database Research team to ensure accurate, verified data in the database. The RAI will work closely with the Aortic Database manager/Clinical Research manager to receive training on the aortic repairs that are performed by the surgeons in the division and will use that knowledge to both abstract and verify data in the Aortic Surgery Patient Database. In addition, they will work on research tasks related to producing manuscripts, presentations, and other projects for the highly productive Division of Cardiothoracic Surgery.

Job Duties

  • Abstracts medical records from paper charts into the aortic database.
  • Reviews entered data for accuracy and clean data of errors.
  • Produces summary metrics data from Qlikview (program utilized for outputting data from the database).  
  • Assists with research tasks for manuscripts and presentations.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in a Basic Science or a related field.
  • Two years of relevant experience.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's degree in a related field.

The position is ideally suited for a candidate interested in learning the inner workings of clinical outcomes research, procedures and systems for maintaining large databases, and surgical knowledge pertaining to aortic repairs. The position may be appropriate for candidates completing gap year(s) prior to pursuing graduate/medical school due to affording opportunities to work on long-term research projects, earn authorship on scientific manuscripts, and acquire patient contact experience through follow up calls.
