Job Description

Summary

The Department of Medicine, Section of Endocrinology, Diabetes and Metabolism at Baylor College of Medicine, Houston, Texas is seeking a Research Assistant I that will support research initiatives at the Michael E. DeBakey VA Medical Center. The clinical and translational laboratories involve hormonal, nutritional, and behavioral/lifestyle interventions to reverse the metabolic and physical complications of aging, including sarcopenic obesity and type 2 diabetes. The candidate will be responsible for planning, completing, and occasionally supervising limited research projects in accordance with general plans approved by the investigator.

Job Duties

  • Assists in research experiments such as Elisa, rt-pcr, multiplexing, western blot, flow cytometry, and immunohistochemistry.
  • Performs and analyzes bone mineral density, and CT scan, and MRI for finite element analyses of bone strength, intermuscular fat, and body composition changes.
  • Designs and conducts research experiments.
  • Collects, complies, and analyzes data.
  • Conducts literature searches and summarizes information in an appropriate format for a particular study.
  • Documents and interprets results of experiments and reports to principal investigators.
  • May develop and modify compute programs.
  • Oversees the maintenance of lab equipment and environment.
  • Assigns activities to less experienced research staff.
  • Plays a lead role in conducting different aspects of translational studies elucidating the molecular and cellular mechanisms underlying muscle and bone adaptations to hormonal, anabolic and lifestyle interventions.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in a Basic Science or a related field.
  • Two years of relevant experience.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor's and/or Master's degree in Basic Science, Nutritional Science or related field.
  • Previous experience in nutritional or behavioral/lifestyle data collection and analysis.
  • Pleasant personality, and works well with human research participants.
  • Good knowledge of Microsoft Office, including MS office.
