Summary

The Therapeutic Innovation Center (THINC) at Baylor College of Medicine (BCM) aims to develop novel therapeutics for emerging targets involved in chromatin and RNA regulation - two critical areas of gene control.  As gene control is a fundamental biological process, its modulation has the potential to impact many forms of human disease. THINC is a unique organization that integrates leading research of BCM faculty with a cutting-edge genomic target validation and drug discovery platform.  We are looking for a highly skilled biochemist to function in several facets of biochemistry and biophysics including protein purification, protein QC, crystallography, and cryoEM.

 

Job Purpose

The position is reserved for career researchers and is intended to be utilized after completing at least three years of Postdoctoral research.

Job Duties

  • Organizes crystallization screens and visually screens protein crystals.
  • Manages logistics of diffraction collection of crystals (crystal shipment, beamline access).
  • Assists in the management of protein production team on site and CRO.
  • Manages a CRO relationship pursuing crystallographic studies.
  • Analyzes diffraction data and utilizes appropriate software for structure determination from in house and CRO data.
  • Provides expertise and trouble-shooting for the structure determination of challenging targets and complexes through X-ray or Cryo-EM.
  • Communicates effectively with a CRO team to determine priorities and ensure timelines are being met.
  • Communicates results to the THINC team and documents results electronically in LabGuru.
  • Performs detailed data analysis to develop structure-activity relationships for chemical series.
  • Makes structure-based recommendations to the THINC team for chemical design.
  • Reads and shares scientific literature relevant to biochemical / biophysical assays and THINC targets.
  • Contributes to management of assay reagents and general laboratory supplies.
  • Maintains equipment and instrumentation required for laboratory work in good condition.
  • Functions as part of a multi-disciplinary drug discovery team, including collaboration with external partners.
     

Minimum Qualifications

  • Doctoral Degree. Experience may not be substituted in lieu of degree.
  • Three years of post doctoral research experience is required.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Doctor of Philosophy Degree in Biochemistry, Bioengineering, Biophysics, or related field preferred.
  • Experience in protein production, protein QC, and x-ray crystallography is required, and experience with other structural techniques (EM, SAXS) is strongly preferred.
  • Experience with multi-channel pipetting and/or liquid handling systems is preferred.
  • Knowledge of molecular biology and biophysical techniques such as BLI, DSF, FP, FRET, ITC, or SPR is a plus.
