Job Description

Perform analyses of operational or safety issues associated with Argonne or other facilities.  Develop computational models or/and extend existing computer codes needed for these analyses. Produce papers and reports to support the basic posture of the facility.  Analyze of off-normal occurrences at the facility or support the conduct of experiments in the facility.  Support new program development activities.

Responsibilities:

  • Perform design, operational and safety analysis of nuclear reactors and other engineering systems using appropriate combination of thermal-hydraulic models and computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations.
  • Develop new mathematical models applicable to the analysis of nuclear facilities and/or other engineering systems and related experiments.  Develop computational strategies and/or computer codes necessary to carry out the required analyses.
  • Compare predictions of facility performance characteristics with experimental results and/or alternative benchmark models.
  • Evaluate and document the results of analytical activities for presentation to the technical community.
  • Contribute to proposals to attract new internal/external funding.
  • Coordinate related work activities at the Laboratory and elsewhere, as appropriate

  • Knowledge of one or more specialized areas in nuclear reactor thermal-hydraulics and computational fluid dynamics.
  • Knowledge of nuclear engineering principles, theories, and practices for the design and analysis of reactor systems.
  • Skills in the conception, design, and evaluation of innovative approaches for quantitative problem solving.
  • Skills in the use of computers, the development of computational models, and the analysis of computational results; Skills in the clear and effective documentation and communication of results, and in the interaction with co-workers and support personnel.
  • Extensive programming knowledge and experience in particular for application to computational fluid dynamics; Experience in using the Nek5000 and/or OpenFOAM CFD codes for the simulation of fluid flow and heat transfer phenomena in complex geometries; Experience in using the STAR-CCM+ CFD code for the simulation of fluid flow and heat transfer phenomena in complex geometries.
  • The required levels of knowledge and skills are typically achieved through formal training in engineering or physics at the Ph.D. level or equivalent.
