We invite you to apply for a Postdoctoral Researcher position within our Materials Science Division (MSD). 

The research project focuses on a broad range of condensed matter and materials physics, with emphasis areas in correlated electron oxides, quantum materials, topological materials, and relaxor ferroelectrics. The successful candidate will have extensive experience and demonstrated creativity and success in the growth of oxide crystals. Experience in crystal growth techniques, including flux growth, floating-zone growth, top-seeded solution growth and Bridgman growth will be prioritized. The candidate will work in a team with other materials synthesis and crystal growth experts to create the highest quality new bulk crystalline materials of interest to the physics community. Experience with characterization using powder diffraction and structure solution using single-crystal x-ray diffraction is essential. While exploration of the physical properties of target materials will be an element of this position, the focus of the expected work will be on materials design and growth. This position will involve a considerable amount of experimental laboratory work with a variety of synthetic techniques in high temperature solid state reactions and crystal growth. The work will also include a variety of physical measurements such x-ray scattering and/or neutron scattering and thermal analysis. A strong, demonstrated commitment to collaborative science is essential. Results will be published in refereed journals and through oral presentations at meetings, conferences, symposia, and seminars. Up-to-date awareness of developments in the relevant areas of research will be expected.

Knowledge, Skills and Experience:
  • Primary expertise in bulk crystal growth of oxides with secondary experience in solid state chemistry or physics.
  • Experience with bulk ceramic synthesis and high temperature solid state reactions.
  • A background performing chemical analysis, x-ray and/or neutron diffraction, and in performing characterization measurements, such as thermogravimetry and calorimetry.
  • Experience with routine SEM measurements is desirable.
  • The candidate is expected to creatively think and work independently and conduct research in a highly interdisciplinary environment of chemists, physicists and materials scientists. 
  • Candidates must have a Ph.D. in physics, materials science, chemistry, or equivalent.
  • Candidate must have strong written and oral communication skills and work well with others in a team oriented environment.

The following majors are NOT considered in this position: nanoscience, thin film growth, and organic or bio-related areas.
