Job Description


A part-time research coordinator I is sought for a grant-funded study on improving the measurement of children’s screen media use and family and environmental influences on children’s screen media, physical activity, and eating. The position includes assisting the Principal Investigator and Project Manager on several projects, the primary project will be laboratory and in-home studies to develop new tools for assessing children’s screen media use. Additionally, some tasks may involve help with a screen media reduction intervention for preschool children. The position requires skills in communicating with the research team and participants, data collection and entry, and coding video data. There may be an opportunity to work on other funded studies in the future.

Job Duties
  • Assist in the coding of videos for studies to develop a new objective system for measuring children’s screen media use (based on computer artificial intelligence algorithms).
  • Assist with screening and recruiting families to participate in studies.
  • Schedule qualified participants and help with data collection activities in a laboratory observation and community studies under supervision of the project manager.
  • Assist Project Manager to organize and code video and interview data.
  • Assist in preparing reports of video and interview data for presentation.
  • Help enter, monitor, maintain, verify, and keep current participant data in Access, Excel and Redcap database systems.
  • Maintain records of data collection (screening, demographic files, clinic visits, gameplay).
  • Maintain general recruitment records (computer and paper).
  • Provide project manager and principal investigator with reports on study progress, data forms, data collection, intervention implementation, and contacts, as requested.
  • Attend project staff meetings.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Education Required: High School diploma or GED.
  • Experience Required: Three years of relevant experience.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Education Preferred: Bachelor's degree in a related field.
  • University level courses in exercise physiology, kinesiology, public health or related field a plus.
  • Experience working with families and children, preferred.
  • Knowledge in collecting human subject research data helpful.
  • Skill and comfort with using PC computers including Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint, and Survey Monkey (or equivalent) software programs a must.
  • Excellent communication skills, both oral and written, and interpersonal skills with investigators, staff, and participants (parents and children). Great people interaction skills to help recruit participants.
  • Working Conditions: Must have a way of getting to community study sites around Houston, Texas, as work is performed at the Children’s Nutrition Research Center (CNRC) and various neighborhoods in Houston. Flexibility and adaptability in work schedule and carrying out job duties, including a willingness to work some evening and weekend hours.
  • Physical Requirements: Must be able to lift and move required assessment equipment and materials.
