Primary Purpose of the Position
Responsible for CLS Lab organization, maintenance, and safety in student labs; assists the CLS instructors with preparing, facilitating, and instructing student laboratory sessions.

Primary Function of Organizational Unit
The Clinical Laboratory Science Department at Winston-Salem State University is to provide students with the appropriate education and training to develop entry-level competencies in all routine areas of the clinical laboratory.

Clinical laboratory science is a profession in which the theoretical knowledge of biology and chemistry is applied in the diagnosis and treatment of disease, maintenance of health, organ transplantation and forensic investigation through the use of clinical laboratory tests. Blood, tissue, and other body fluids can be analyzed and examined for foreign organisms and abnormalities. It requires the exercise of independent judgment, correlation of test results and interpretation of findings with respect to normal values. Graduates of this program are prepared for entry-level positions in clinical and research laboratories, hospitals, public health agencies, physicians’ offices, institutions, pharmaceutical companies, industrial laboratories, and some marketing and consulting agencies.

Minimum Experience/Education
Bachelor’s degree in medical technology, chemistry, or a biological science and three years of laboratory experience related to the area of assignment or equivalent combination of training and experience. May require compliance with current Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments (CLIA) regulations.

Preferred Years Experience, Skills, Training, Education
The above minimum requirements plus National Certification.
