ORGANIZATIONAL SUMMARY:

Research & Innovation (R&I) is a vice presidential area charged with system-wide administration of the USF Research Enterprise, which generates over $411M in sponsored contracts and grants annually and supports a USF Research Park with a business incubator. R&I, with a budget of $32 million annually, provides guidance and oversight to seven divisions/units at multiple campuses and locations in order to ensure the appropriate investment of University resources in the Research Enterprise and compliance with federal regulations. This position is a member of Research Technologies (RT), a separately budgeted unit within the senior vice president's office with an annual budget of approximately $750,000. The Director reports directly to the R&I Director of Administrative Operations, with a dotted-line reporting relationship to the Senior Vice President for Research & Innovation. RT is comprised of eight professional positions, and three student workers dedicated to creating and supporting research-specific electronic systems with system-wide impact, as well as the computing needs of over 220 users. One additional professional position and four additional technology-based staff positions in other units are indirect reports to RT.

POSITION SUMMARY:

This position is responsible for helping maintain the high availability of Research & Innovation's Azure cloud, servers, databases, and applications. Applies professional experience in administering, maintaining, and upgrading existing complex infrastructure. Experienced as a technical expert to ascertain departmental needs and work with Sr. Systems Administrator to determine compute and development resources. Performs the installation of server operating systems, databases, vendor and in-house applications, maintenance and security, and data management. This work is mainly desk-based and requires frequent interaction with Executives, department personnel, technical professionals, and consultants.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Deploys, configures, and maintains high availability server systems, ensuring proper integration with other university systems. Performs software installations and upgrades to operating systems, vendor applications, and custom developed software. Monitors and tunes systems to achieve optimum performance levels.

Deploys, configures, and maintains high availability database servers, including backups, monitoring, and performance tuning. Create, monitor, and maintain automated ETL packages, ensuring linked databases are secure, integrity of loaded/transformed data, and nightly integration processes.

Evaluate and maintain server, database, and network ACL security. Evaluates and implements data encryption, security, and integrity and liaisons with USF Information Security on implementing the latest security standards.

Provides technical/end-user support, liaising with vendors, external departments, and technical experts. Maintains and verifies licensing agreements and CAL counts to ensure compliance with software vendors. Coordinates purchase of vendor hardware, software, and other computer-related items for OR&I divisions/units.

Working with Sr. Systems Administrator, evaluates future deployments in Microsoft Azure, recommending new approaches, technologies, and systems that help further our migration and deployments in the cloud.

POSITION QUALIFICATIONS:

MINIMUM:

Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, MIS or other field involving software and analytical training, or a Bachelor's degree with no specific required field and one year of IT related work experience, OR a combination of 5 years of IT related work experience and validated training. Preparation for a relevant IT certification is considered to be related training.

PREFERRED:

Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Information Technology, Cybersecurity, or similar fields preferred. Industry certifications from Microsoft, (ISC), Cisco, CompTIA, or similar is a plus. Experience working in a higher education or enterprise is a plus. Experience working with servers, databases, ETL, development frameworks (PHP, JavaScript, etc.), cloud infrastructure (Azure, AWS, Google Cloud, etc.) a plus.
