Job DescriptionJob Summary:
The Center for Innovation in Global Health Technologies (CIGHT) is recruiting one research engineer to join cross function team to develop molecular diagnostic tests and an integrated molecular platform for use at the point-of-care. The position provides assistance in the execution of research projects and manufacturing within the Lab Participates in the delivery of services and consultation to researchers and investigators to facilitate technical and specialized scientific research at an entry to intermediate level. Works independently and as part of the lab’s team to ensure high quality service for the research community.
**This is a one year termed position subject to renewal dependent on available funding.
Responsible for operation of a specialized research area or laboratory with one or more faculty members within a department. Under the general direction of a senior faculty or staff member, is able to operate with some latitude in unreviewed actions or decisions. Assists senior staff in the daily oversight of operations and/ or projects.
Provides feedback in the development of protocol and criteria; may determine interview procedures, may participate in the protocol approval process, and maintains clear and accurate documentation of protocols. Assists in the design of intervention protocols.
Maintains instrumentation logs, databases, intellectual property, and inventories.
May contribute to grant writing.
Develops cost analyses and quotes.
May act as a liaison with other University departments, divisions, researchers and students. Collaborates in the development of new techniques, fabrications, etc.
Trains users in equipment operation and laboratory techniques, explains and demonstrates technology and equipment capabilities, operations, limitations and outcomes. Participates in the development and delivery of presentations, seminars, and workshops.
Networks and collaborates with key decision-makers within Northwestern’s research community, including INVO, Principal Investigators, Research Faculty, students, and visiting scholars.
Coordinates data collection and screening and verifies the data. Conducts analysis of data, interprets and implements research methodology based on outcome of analysis. Co-authors publications and may co-present results with Principal Investigator at meetings and/ or conferences.
Generates, collects, and analyzes data.
Compiles QA data; participates in redesign efforts based on data analysis.
Follows product efficiency over time.
Applies relevant science when collaborating on the development, design, and execution of one or more small or moderately complex research projects or experiments in line with the lab’s strategic plan. Reviews progress and evaluates results. Formulates research methods and suggests options for improving quality, identifies potential problems, recommends and implements solutions.
Utilizes advances knowledge of applications, principles, theories, and concepts to design and troubleshoot projects for the research community.
Troubleshoots problems with procedures and equipment, and suggests adjustments to protocols, and participates in redesign efforts.
Works on advanced problems in which analysis of situations or data requires an in-depth evaluation of various factors.
Manufactures test kits, training modules, and instrumentation.
Participates with senior staff on the engineering design of both devices and consumables.
Assists in the development of engineered components in the lab including but not limited to electronics, materials, biochemistry.
May supervise non-exempt research and support personnel.
Trains and provides oversight to lower-level research lab staff and clients.
May provide performance feedback on lower-level research lab staff.
Performs other duties as assigned
Successful completion of a bachelor’s program or higher degree, with at least two years of relevant domain experience; OR appropriate combination of education and experience.

Preferred Qualifications: (Education and experience)
Master’s Degree in mechanical engineering, chemical engineering, biomedical engineering, biochemistry, chemistry or cell and molecular biology.
3 years or more of laboratory research experience.

Strong mechanical aptitude.
Hands-on experience in designing and building prototypes.
Excellent attention to detail and troubleshooting abilities.
Experience with SolidWorks.
