The Office of the Vice Chancellor of Research has an internal opening for a part-time (0.25 FTE) University Staff (unclassified) Associate Vice Chancellor for Basic Science Research position.
The University of Colorado Denver | Anschutz Medical Campus is a public research university with two campuses serving more than 18,000 students and awarding nearly 4,000 degrees each year. The School of Medicine has 5 basic science departments: Biochemistry & Molecular Genetics, Cell & Developmental Biology, Immunology/Microbiology, Pharmacology, and Physiology & Biophysics, and many of the clinical departments and other schools and colleges contain basic research faculty. In addition to the wide array of health-related professional and graduate programs and facilities offered at the CU Anschutz campus, over 100 undergraduate and graduate degree programs are provided at CU Denver, our comprehensive, general academic campus located in the heart of downtown Denver. The Anschutz Medical Campus is a leader in delivering the finest clinical care and the research mission is inherently entwined with our clinical services and mission.
The Associate Vice Chancellor for Basic Science Research (AVCBSR) will work in the Office of the Vice Chancellor of Research (oVCR) with a focus on the needs and perspective of basic science researchers. A priority within the leadership role of this position will be to ensure research issues related to basic science on the campuses are elevated and prioritized. The work will require collaborative coordination with the basic science faculty, the basic science departments, across both campuses and the oVCR. The AVCBSR works closely with the Vice Chancellor for Research (VCR), the Associate Vice Chancellor for Regulatory Compliance, Assistant Vice Chancellor for Research at the CU Denver Campus, and the Office of Laboratory Animal Research to fully align basic research with the overall missions of the two campuses.
The AVCBSR will play a leadership role in helping the campuses meet emerging basic research opportunities. Important components of the research agenda include building faculty involvement in program project grants, enhancing interdisciplinary research, connecting the relevant researchers across disciplines, and supporting collaborative research across the CU system. The AVCBSR will also represent the oVCR in appropriate committees on which expertise in the basic sciences is needed.
Examples of Work Performed:
The Associate Vice Chancellor for Basic Science Research has responsibilities including, but not limited to:
Provides centralized advocacy of university basic research activities within the office of the VCR. Works collaboratively with basic science faculty, departments, and schools to promote university basic research activities. The AVCBSR will assist the faculty in targeting the acquisition of federal, state and other institute/foundation resources within the oVCR.
Track and highlight basic science research opportunities and evolving programmatic emphasis within NIH/NSF and other major funding agencies to facilitate growth in the CU Anschutz and CU Denver basic research enterprises.
Identify changes in the basic science research funding landscape and proactive steps the campuses can take to ensure ongoing competitiveness in obtaining research grants.
Establishes and chairs ad hoc internal review committees to review CU internal grant programs and submissions for one-grant-per-institution award opportunities focused on basic science research.
Develops and maintains an effective internal and external communication process. The communication process should promote collaboration among the disciplines and campuses, to increase the research and creative work endeavors at CU Anschutz and CU Denver.
Provides expert advice related to basic science research to the VCR and other members of the executive leadership team.
Serves as the university interface representing the oVCR with affiliate entities regarding matters related to basic research, including support of inter-campus collaborative efforts with CU Boulder and CU Colorado Springs, as well as other institutions of higher learning in the State of Colorado and the biotechnology community.
Represents the VCR on assigned standing or special committees. Establishes and directs committees and task forces as appropriate and delegated.
Supports the VCR in upholding the responsible conduct of research: Collaborates with the Research Integrity Officer and the Graduate School to coordinate educational activities and coordinate resources to enable faculty to meet their compliance obligations.

Salary and Benefits:
Salary is negotiable and commensurate with skills and experience.
This position is not eligible for overtime compensation
