Job Description

Job Purpose

Under minimal supervision, provides skilled care and handling of laboratory animals in a safe and sanitary manner. Primary working areas include standard housing areas as well as specialized areas including, but not limited to, non-human primate housing areas, bio-hazardous areas, and animal colonies requiring specialized procedures. Also responsible for limited supervisory duties including direction and oversight of work, but excluding discipline.

Job Duties
  • Feeds and waters animals.
  • Changes animal caging as scheduled, sanitizing rooms, equipment and hallways.
  • Assists investigators and veterinarians in performing routine and specialized procedures.
  • Administers prescribed medications.
  • Maintains accurate animal health records.
  • Provides pre- and post- surgical care of animals.
  • Conducts daily animal health checks.
  • Establishes, monitors and maintains non-animal and animal inventories.
  • Ensures that activities are in compliance with AAALAC standards.
  • Orders laboratory supplies and pharmaceuticals.
  • Assigns work activities of less experienced Lab Animal Technicians.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Education Required: High School diploma or GED.
  • Experience Required: Four years of relevant experience.
  • Certification/Licenses/Registration: Assistant Laboratory Animal Technician (ALAT) by the American Association for Laboratory Animal Science (AALAS).  Certification must be obtained within one year of hire or promotion.
