Job Description

The incumbent will develop power systems modeling tools that support energy, economic, and financial analyses. Some of these tools will require the creation of simulation and optimization routines. The incumbent will also perform data analytics and conduct research related to a wide range of topic areas including the analysis of energy and power systems, optimization of hydropower plant and reservoir operations, electricity market design and operation, renewable energy integration, and energy technologies.  This position may require occasional domestic and international travel. Develops and implements economic and financial algorithms and tools and conducts data analysis related to the energy and power systems, with emphasis on the following areas: (1) hydropower systems analysis and optimization; (2) grid integration of variable energy resources; (3) hydrological forecasting; (4) energy storage; and (5) electricity market analysis.Supports multidisciplinary teams in the application of these methods, models and tools to complex issues in the domains of environmental, water, and energy system analysis. Prepares reports, papers, and presentations for conferences, workshops, and technical journals. Supports program development including the preparation of proposals and participating in sponsor interactions.

Comprehensive skills in developing innovative algorithms, methodologies, and tools to model and simulate energy and power systems and/or their components.

Considerable knowledge of mathematical optimization methods (e.g. mixed integer programming, nonlinear optimization, stochastic programming). Coding skills are a plus but not required.Considerable knowledge and experience developing and using advanced Excel applicationsConsiderable skills in working in a multidisciplinary team environment. Considerable skills in oral and written communication.

Good knowledge of data analytics, power systems operations/market design, issues surrounding the integration of variable energy renewables, and environmental issues with emphasis on hydropower/water management. Good knowledge of hydropower systems, hydrology, and reservoir management. Good experience in statistics and statistical analysis. Good understanding of basic financial and economic principles.

Good experience in academic writing and publication.
