Job Description

The Systems Assessment Center (SAC) in the Energy Systems Division of Argonne National Laboratory (ANL) has a postdoctoral appointee position open.  The candidate will develop models and conduct analysis to access energy, environmental, and economic impacts of alternative fuels, vehicle technologies, freight modes, energy systems/technologies and mobility trends (e.g. travel, refueling and adoption behavior) from system to national level. Example project could include but not limited to identify optimal locations for charging infrastructure or hydrogen filling stations for light duty and heavy duty vehicles, the likely buildout of those locations into networks, and the effect of that buildout on market penetration and energy infrastructure.

  • Qualified individuals should have a Ph.D. degree in transportation, operations research, mechanical, environmental, physics, or a related field, and be familiar with energy and environmental impacts of transportation systems, modes and vehicle/fuel technologies.
  • Strong expertise and experience in vehicle, energy or transportation systems analysis and modeling, especially in freight sector.
  • Understanding/background/skills in one or more of the following:
    • General operation of the transportation sector and of transportation systems within it
    • Emerging technologies (such as connected and automated vehicles, shared mobility, etc) and alternative fuels likely to be used in transportation systems,
    • System modeling methodologies such as agent-based modeling/simulation
    • Energy and environmental impacts of transportation systems, modes and vehicle/fuel technologies
    • Various databases and analytical models and experience in analyzing large data sets
    • Computer programming (in Java, Python or a similar language), MS Excel, SAS and other relevant software
    • Vehicle to grid interaction
  • Good oral and written communication skills
