Job DescriptionJob Summary
The Lab Operations Coordinator will be responsible for preparing materials for microbiology, introductory biology, ecology, human biology, molecular biology and other life science lab courses. Maintaining laboratory equipment, and laboratory areas; keeping inventory of laboratory equipment, reagents and supplies; maintaining microbial cultures and live biological specimens; coordinating laboratories; supervising and teaching graduate teaching aides and undergraduates students the appropriate skills necessary to work in the laboratories. Assisting faculty in planning, troubleshooting, and improving laboratory experiments as well as assisting faculty and undergraduate and graduate students with research. Supporting various department projects and initiatives and performing other duties as assigned. Obtaining pricing and quotations for materials orders and ordering; solving problems associated with orders.
Broad knowledge in various biology disciplines (such as microbiology, genetics, molecular and cellular biology, ecology, anatomy and physiology, Immunology) and chemistry are necessary. Excellent aseptic and laboratory techniques are required. Molecular techniques are highly desirable. Must be able to maintain and troubleshoot a wide variety of laboratory instruments. Strong time management, multi-tasking, organizational, planning, and problem solving skills are essential. Ability to, work independently, be detail-oriented, and complete tasks in a timely manner. Good communication, computation, computer skills (word processing, spreadsheet, database) and an excellent work ethic are critical. Must be able to work a flexible schedule as labs occur anytime between 8 am-10 pm. Must be able to lift, carry, push, pull 10-25 lbs frequently and up to 40 lbs occasionally.
Bachelor's degree in Biology required. Master's degree in Biology preferred.
1 year work experience in biology labs is required. Experience with laboratory instrument maintenance and trouble-shooting is an asset. Familiarity with software used in word processing, and database construction.
