Job Description

Summary

The Research Scientist conducts experiments in an independent manner under the overall guidance of the Project Supervisors [Lawrence Donehower, Olivier Lichtarge, and Margaret Goodell - can leave these names out if not appropriate].  The Research Scientist may have supervisory responsibility for other laboratory personnel and be expected to collaborate with researchers in the collaborating laboratories.

Job Purpose

This position will provide responsible and skilled technical assistance in support of research projects including assistance with project scoping, data generation, analysis, scientific writing, and reporting. Daily tasks include documenting, evaluating, analyzing, monitoring and communicating about scientific and collaborative projects. Status report generation, data presentations, and manuscript preparation are also some of the routine duties and responsibilities for this position. Interaction with a variety of collaborators will be routine so a high level of interpersonal communication skills is needed. He/she should be flexible and commit to finishing goals in a timely manner. The position is focused on a number of molecular biology technologies, such as PCR, qPCR, CRISPR methods, siRNA and shRNA methods and vectors, cell culture, recombinant DNA methods, plasmid and vector generation and use, protein isolation and Western blot analysis, biochemical assays to measure phosphatase and kinase activities, and DNA repair assays.  Experience with DNA crosslink repair and FANC genes particularly useful.  

Job Duties

Under the general direction of the Principal Investigator:

  • Plans, directs and conducts research experiments.
  • Evaluates and analyzes data.
  • Develops research techniques and performs applications required for specific research projects.
  • May conduct literature searches and summarize information in an appropriate format for a particular study.
  • Documents results of experiments and reports to principal investigators.
  • May supervise, schedule and coordinate the activities of less experienced research staff.
Minimum Qualifications

Education:

Required: Doctoral Degree. Experience may not be substituted in lieu of degree.

Experience:

Required: Three years of post doctoral research experience.

Additional Skills
  • Demonstrated experience in PCR, RT-PCR, qPCR.
  • Experience in cell culture, transfection, plasmid vectors, retrovirals
  • Experience in recombinant DNA methods, generation of plasmids, vectors
  • Experience in siRNA, shRNA, and/or CRISPR/Cas9 knockout/knockdown methods
  • Experience in protein methods, including Western blotting and immunoprecipitations
  • Proven proficiency in data analysis, research design, troubleshooting, and the evaluation of new techniques and procedures.
  • Preferred: Experience in DNA Repair assays and DNA crosslink repair
  • Ease with documenting experimental procedures, collecting, compiling, evaluating, analyzing data and interpreting detailed assay procedures and test results.
  • Excellence in troubleshooting problematic results.
  • Dedication to updating sample tracking and project summaries using excel sheets and performing routine laboratory equipment maintenance and logging records as required
