Job Description

The Kelley Lab in the Department of Biological Sciences at Columbia University in the City of New York is seeking applicants for a Staff Associate who will participate in research on discovering principles and mechanisms responsible for the evolution of vocal communication with quantitative genetics. He/She will work on project entitled “Multimodal Instrument Design: Exploring the Limits of Neural Activity to Generate Music” run in conjunction with the Center for Science and Society and the Kelley lab. The incumbents duties will be as follows:

High throughput genome sequencing using Hidden Marko Models, 25%

Quantitative analyses of acoustic features, 20%

Obtaining, curating, and analyzing four large data sets from 2,000 individual hybrid frogs 20%

Making two-day recordings of male vocalizations, auditory evoked potentials from 1000 female frogs, and video recordings of male/female interactions between frogs of different genotypes – 20%

Supervising animal care and instruct graduate students and undergraduates with lab procedures and safety protocols regarding the handling of the frogs – 10%

Supervising record keeping for supply inventories and facilitate ordering, update lab notebooks and records and perform other duties as assigned – 5%

Minimum Degree Required:

Minimum Qualifications :
Basic molecular biology techniques
DNA sequencing
Statistical Analyses
Supervision of animal husbandry and acoustic recording
Experience working with animal experimental models
